Larvitar Community Day Classic

The Larvitar family is a pretty interesting one. Alongside the Beldum family, these Pokemon are the only pseudo-Legendary Pokemon that aren’t dragon types for a change. They’re also definitely great Pokemon overall, and they have Mega Evolutions too. So it’s worth grabbing Larvitars whenever you can.

Finally, a chance to get some Larvitar shinies

For me, I’ve actually only managed to catch 3 shiny Larvitars in the past. Despite catching a LOT of Larvitars, the shinies not so much ellude me but beg to have a few more in my collection. This event allowed me to get a shiny Tyranitar with Smack Down, its exclusive move. Funnily enough though, my favourite stage as a shiny is Pupitar. It has this brilliant purple colour which is completely missing from both Larvitar and Tyranitar.

This Classic Community Day was also a great chance to get some XL candy. I mega-evolved a Steelix (which shares the same ground type Larvitar does) and got more candy that way. But my Steelix (named Goldmember) is a level 2 Mega, meaning I had increased chance of getting XL Candy. After all, I need all the candy I can get to max out my 100% Shadow Tyranitar. And this Community Day finally allowed me to do it.

That Tyranitar cost 336 XL Candy and 250k stardust. Most of which I obtained today. This was a great chance to get XL candy, and I got more because I had a mega Steelix as my buddy. Megas can help a lot because they offer extra candy and, if high enough a level, they increase the chances of getting XL Candy too.

Is Smack Down any good?

The answer here is a bit of a yes but also no. Back when Smack Down Tyranitar came out, it was definitely a great choice if you eneded a rock type. However, over the years, we’ve had a LOT of new rock types introduced, and quite a few of them are probably a bit better. There’s a very stiff competition between Tyranitar and the likes of Rampardos, Rhyperior and Terrakion.

But a stone-based Tyranitar isn’t a bad thing. In fact, because Tyranitar is pretty bulky, he works like a nice anchor on the end of your raid team. Also, I’ve had quite a bit of success using Tyranitar in Team Rocket battles. Sure, I don’t use Smack Down Tyranitar as much as I used to, but it’s definitely a fine addition to our collections.

Classic Community Days are pretty alright.

Honestly, I really like these Classic Community Days. It’s a chance for new players to catch up on older events. Sure, some events do allow you to get special moves on various Pokemon, but those are wholly inconsistent. For example, Salamence was in an event prior to the Classic Community Day but didn’t get his special move, but the Hoenn Mega Raid event did give out Pokemon with their special moves. They also lack the spirit of a Community Day in general.

Personally though, I enjoyed this event because it was spent with my friends. Which is kinda the whole point of Community Days. They’re meant to get people to play together.
