Fun Ways to Play Left 4 Dead 2 Solo Without Bots

Left 4 Dead 2 is undeniably a multiplayer-game, designed to emphasize teamwork and excel when you bring buddies who can watch your back. Hell, it even won the “Better With Friends” award in the inaugural Steam Awards. But as I’ve noted in a few earlier articles, my preferred way to play is completely solo. Not even with ally bots; I like to fight the endless zombie hordes completely on my lonesome. And when I’m not soloing myself, I like to watch the pros who have turned it into an art form. My main contribution to the solo-L4D2 community is “Solo No… [Continue Reading]

Dark Spooky Forest Week: Miasmata and Rake

On the surface these two games don’t have much in common beyond taking place in dark spooky forests. The main reason they’re sharing an article is that they evoke the same feelings when played; both are satisfying exploration-based games that immersed the player like few of their competitors could. The first title, Miasmata, was one of my earliest gaming loves and I spent hours working through my first playthrough. You control Robert Hughes, a plague-stricken scientist who washes ashore a remote tropical island seeking the cure to his illness. The core gameplay involves charting the island looking for rare plants… [Continue Reading]

Planetside, too

In the interests of expanding our horizons, Medic and I are doing an exchange where we take turns picking a free-to-play multiplayer game that one of us hasn’t tried. Last week we played Warframe, which Medic wrote about, and this week we were gonna try my old college love, Planetside 2, but then the game didn’t work on Medic’s computer. (Update: It eventually fixed itself, and our co-op adventures will be chronicled in Medic’s upcoming article!) However, this did cause me to reinstall again, and soon I was teleported back to my 2013 dorm room–running through Auraxian landscapes, solo-capping control points and constantly reviving corpses. I don’t… [Continue Reading]

Why You Should Make GIFs

It’s fun to watch the internet evolve. Back in the early days the best way for gamers to show each other sick plays was through screenshots or YouTube videos. The problem is that screenshots aren’t terribly good at displaying exciting events like headshots or near escapes, and videos often require the viewer to navigate away from their current social media of choice to go watch the video. I know when I’m surfing reddit I often don’t have the attention span to click a link to YouTube and wait for the video to buffer in order to see the content. So… [Continue Reading]
