GO Fest 2023 – Day 2

Day Two of GO Fest is always a bit more relaxed compared to day one. Mostly. While day one mostly focused on Diancie and collection challenges, day two focused on a lot more raids and featured Mega Rayquaza. Now, Mega Rayquaza is a pretty big thing. It’s so powerful that, in competitive Pokemon battling in the main games, Mega Rayquaza has to be banned. It’s hugely powerful and can completely nullify its weaknesses. In Pokemon GO, it’s not as powerful, but it still does an absolute ton of damage, to the point that it’s one of the most powerful Pokemon… [Continue Reading]

Mega Evolutions are actually good now in Pokemon GO

When Mega Evolutions first came out in Pokemon GO, the system was genuinely not very good at all. The costs to Mega Evolve were really high, they didn’t last very long and getting mega candy was genuinely a chore. However, these days, Mega Pokemon are way more accessible. To the point that they are actually worth using. They last longer The first major change to Mega Evolutions was to make them last longer. Originally, Mega Pokemon only lasted for four hours, before turning back to normal. This was changed to 8 hours, which gives players plenty more time, especially in… [Continue Reading]

Pokemon GO’s Mega Evolutions Aren’t So Bad Any More

When Mega Pokemon came out, no one was particularly happy. The time and effort required to actually get a Mega Pokemon was incredibly demanding. And to make matters worse, these Pokemon could only be mega-evolved for 4 hours at a time. Everything about the whole system felt incredibly wrong. But lately, Mega Evolutions don’t feel nearly as bad as they used to be. There’s been improvements. One or two raids The first and biggest change is the number of raids you have to do. Originally, you’d get 50-80 Mega Candy per Mega Raid you did. This meant that, for the… [Continue Reading]

A Like and Dislike for Mega Raids in Pokemon GO

It seems that most people have somewhat accepted Mega Pokemon. Now that there are easier ways to earn Mega Candy, and the Megas stay around for 8 hours, it’s all just about acceptable. Yet still, there’s something about Mega Raids that irks me. They’re just not quite right. No one really wants to do them If you’re unlucky enough to miss a debut of a mega Pokemon, then you probably won’t find many people hosting them. At least, that’s the problem I’ve been having with Mega Raids. I couldn’t get people to join in Manectric raids nor Ampharos. But even… [Continue Reading]

Yet More Complaining About Mega Pokemon

I wasn’t going to complain any more about Mega Pokemon in Pokemon GO. It felt rather fruitless, especially since it’s so easily ignored. But, on a whim, I decided to Mega-Evolve a Gengar for a Lugia raid. My Gengar, with a CP of 3336, lasted all of 10 seconds. Lugia’s Dragon Tail kicked the shit out of it, then nuked Gengar with a Hydro Pump. I might as well have just used a Darkrai or a Giratina, both of which lasted far longer than my Mega Gengar did. This is despite me trying to dodge. Because dodging only seems to… [Continue Reading]

Is There A Use to Mega Pokemon?

The other day, I saw my first practical use of someone using a Mega Pokemon in a raid. During a raid against Giratina, someone used a Mega Houndoom. Sadly, I was using Dragon types at the time, and because there were 15 people in the raid, it didn’t really do much. But the thought was nice, and Mega Houndoom is cool. However, just how worthwhile was that Mega Evolution? Let’s have a look. Step 1: obtaining your Mega Evolution To Mega Evolve your Houndoom for the first time, you need 200 candy. You get a maximum of 90 candy per… [Continue Reading]

The Best (Upcoming) Mega Evolutions in Pokemon GO

Mega evolutions have finally (to an extremely limited degree) come out! While people aren’t super happy with the execution right now, I’m confident they’ll become more practical and available over time. That’s Niantic’s tried-and-true strategy; bait the whales by releasing new content with incredibly low odds and high barriers to acquisition, then make it more common once they’ve made all their early money and nobody cares anymore. So this article is looking to the future; now that we know how Mega Evolutions work, which ones are worth looking out for when they inevitably enter the game? Here’s my shortlist: 1.… [Continue Reading]

Mega Pokemon have arrived in Pokemon GO and they’re basically inaccessible!

Yay! Mega Evolutions have arrived! For Beedrill and the three Kanto Starters! Amazing! And three of them require huge amounts of raids to obtain! Woo! If you can’t tell already, I’m being somewhat sarcastic. While I had sat on my ass and hoped that maybe the data miners were wrong, well, they weren’t. Mega Evolutions aren’t some cool thing to unlock with your best buddy. It’s a grind that involves doing lots of raids. Raid, raid, raid. So, to get your Mega Evolution of choice, you need to do Mega Evolution Raids for the Pokemon you want to Mega Evolve.… [Continue Reading]

A Casual Player’s Ramble About How Mega Pokemon Won’t Be As Game-Breaking As We All Think

Mega Pokemon have been confirmed for Pokemon Go for 2020, but we don’t know much about them. We don’t know how we’ll obtain Mega Pokemon or trigger their special evolutions or anything. All we know is that Mega Evolutions are coming “soon”. But, considering how powerful Mega Pokemon are in the main games, players worry that Mega Pokemon will get in the way of everything. That they’ll be game-breaking in some way. Honestly, I don’t think that’s going to happen. In the main games, these Pokemon are monsters. Mega Pokemon are insanely strong in normal Pokemon games. I mean, it’s… [Continue Reading]

What Would Mega Evolutions Entail for Pokemon Go?

In the recent Pokemon Presents video, Pokemon Go was given a small section. In it, we are informed that Go Fest, a normally local event in various cities, would be made completely digital. A new legendary Pokemon, Victini, was also teased to be released in Pokemon Go. But more importantly, we were treated to a brief trailer which very clearly suggested that we are getting Mega Evolutions. In 2020, apparently. The Pokemon Go section ends with viewers being told that Mega Evolutions will be added based on Pokemon Go’s unique gameplay. But what does this mean for Pokemon Go? Well,… [Continue Reading]
