Building the Best Gym Attackers in Pokemon GO

Pokemon GO is experiencing a booming renaissance after Niantic added several awesome features that augment the core gameplay. The research quest mechanic gives players constant goals beyond simply catching Pokemon, and the new Adventure sync system that links Pokemon Go’s progress with your fitness app of choice is encouraging players to use the app to get fit. The slow rollout of Gen IV and the imminent PvP mode is creating all sorts of buzz. But its also bringing in a lot of players who don’t know the core elements of Pokemon GO‘s battling system. It’s pretty easy from a surface look, but… [Continue Reading]

Building Proper Gym Defenders in Pokemon GO

As you play Pokemon GO, you’ll quickly accrue a sizeable army of tried-and-true battlers to help you take on even the most stalwart of gyms and fearsome of raids (and soon, rival trainers!) But most of those Pokemon unfortunately will not make good gym defenders. A gym defender has an impossible task assigned to them. Even at top motivation, any attacking Pokemon will have a massive advantage going into a fight. Even worse, they likely will not be at top motivation, which only makes their chances bleaker. This makes it all the more important that you select the best possible… [Continue Reading]

A Community Day Weekend – The Pros and Cons of Catching Up

Every month of 2018 has had a Community Day in Pokemon Go. One day, for three hours, one specific Pokemon will spawn with higher chances of being shiny and their final evolutions having unique moves only available during the event. December’s Community Day though was different. December got a Community Day Weekend. Which technically started on November 30th. Every Pokemon available from all the other Community Days returned for us to catch up on. Sounds cool, but there’s always some pros and cons about these things. Pro: It’s over a weekend Three days of spawns on top of the three-hour… [Continue Reading]

Quest for a Wired, Nutty Ditto – Let’s Go, Meltan

To coincide with the release of the new Let’s Go: Pikachu and Eevee games on the Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Go received an update and a mini event. The update includes a quest that rewards you with a brand new Pokemon, exclusive to the Switch games and Pokemon Go – the weird thing known as Meltan. Meltan first appeared after the Chikorita community day, replacing all the Chikoritas and other Pokemon who were roaming around. I actually saw one before the event ended, sitting between a couple of Chikoritas, and assumed it was just a broken placeholder or something, especially considering… [Continue Reading]

On Tyranitar

“Τί θα χρησιμοποιείτε για το raid?” (“What will you use for the raid?”) is a phrase I ask before most level 4 or 5 raids in Pokemon Go. I always ask my fellow players what Pokemon they will use to beat the shit out of some poor raid boss. The answer though is always the same. “Tyranitar.” “Τίποτε άλλο?” (“Anything else?”) “Μόνο Tyranitar.” Every time. Occasionally you will get the odd Mewtwo or Gengar, always with Shadow Ball. Sometimes one of the older players will have a Rayquaza or a Ho-Oh. Occasionally for a level 4 raid you’ll see the… [Continue Reading]

The Horrible Realization That Everything I Know is Wrong

I don’t know how I’ve managed this, but really, I’ve been throwing Pokeballs wrong the entire time I’ve been playing Pokemon Go. And basically I’ve been an idiot in general when it comes to this silly little mobile game. I’m not really sure where to start on this. I suppose it all begins with my sister introducing me to the game one day when she had a day off work and I met up with her in town. I installed the game while we had a drink in a local cafe and she showed me the basics of the game,… [Continue Reading]

On Deoxys and Ex Raids

My first Ex Raid may have been a total disaster for me, but I got over my anger and started playing Pokemon Go again. Quite obviously if you’re a regular reader, since I published an article about Pokemon Go’s Gengar event the other day, not to mention the fact that I managed to catch 108 Pokemon for the Spiritomb research. Since that Ex Raid, I’ve done two more and was going to be invited to do another but unfortunately I had work. Clearly something must have changed since I did that first raid, because Deoxys was much easier to catch… [Continue Reading]

On Dragonite

Playing Pokemon Go has brought out the nerdy side of me. It’s also gone and brought out a lot of nostalgia, as well as a desire to go through all my old Pokemon cards. When I was little and when I collected them, my two favourites were always Ponyta and Dratini. I managed to collect multiple Rapidash and Dragonair cards, but I never found a Dragonite, so for a long time, I’d forgotten about that Pokemon. It wasn’t until I hatched a Dratini from an egg in Pokemon Go that I remembered that Dragonite was a thing. Because I instantly… [Continue Reading]

Fricking Gengar

November 3rd, from noon until 3pm local time, every raid was replaced by Gengar, with a chance to get a shiny one. It was a bit like the Moltres day, except Gengar’s a weird purple lump and Moltres is a legendary flaming chicken. I never really understood the obsession with Gengar. Sure, he can get Shadow Ball, which is a high damage attack, and he’s a Ghost type Pokemon, but he’s also the most glass cannon-y of glass cannons. If you can get a nice Shadow Ball off Gengar, sure, the damage is good. But all it takes is one… [Continue Reading]

5 Quality of Life Features I’d Like to See in Pokemon GO

I do enjoy Pokemon GO, but sometimes the game feels like it’s wearing me down, that some basic actions are rather tedious and annoying, only fixed with a little bit of trial and error. So I’ve gone and made a little list of features and changes that I feel would make Pokemon GO a little bit more user friendly! The ability to view attacks or elements when picking Pokemon for battle I’ve got a good 10 Houndooms, all of which have got different attacks and different CPs. Most of them have dark attacks, but a couple of them have either… [Continue Reading]
