On Being A Shit Helmsman

On the Stormcloud and in the Calcium Kings, the Sea of Thieves guild I belong to, run by my long-time friend Bacxaber, everyone kinda has their own job. I’m a cannoneer and bucketer, Bacxaber is main cannoneer and boarder, he’s normally the one who boards other ships and forces them to drop anchor, and both Zach and Fox split being the helmsman and firing cannons, with Fox doing more cannoneering and Zach doing more repairs. We know what we are good at, we know our jobs and it cuts down on unneeded communication. But sometimes, the normal team isn’t around,… [Continue Reading]

The Reapers/Servants Split

While I was sailing on my new brig, Arkay’s Fang, and customizing it to look like a representative of the Reaper’s Bones, I noticed that Bacxaber was running around with his Skeleton curse on. Mostly because we’d done a couple of Sea Forts with the newest Stormcloud recruit, and we didn’t want the new guy to get confused by Bacxaber’s normal Ghost-curse-wearing self. The Skeleton Curse is a reward for reaching rank 100 with the Servants of the Flame, one of the two Hourglass PvP-only factions, the other being the Guardians of Fortune. Now, I don’t do Hourglass PvP because… [Continue Reading]

On Three-Manning A Galleon

In Sea of Thieves, having less than the recommended number of players on a ship doesn’t always work. On a sloop, you can get away with being just one person mostly because sloops are deceptively tanky, they take a lot of chainshot to break their mast and their anchor can be raised super fast, even with just one person. With brigs and galleons though, the amount of bucketing needed to keep a ship afloat is a LOT greater than a sloop, so being down a man is a massive handicap. You also can’t make use of the extra cannons, the… [Continue Reading]

How to Not Join an Alliance in the Sea of Thieves Part 2

Out of all the articles I thought I’d need to write a part 2 for, this article, about how not to join an alliance, is definitely not one of them. I thought that the initial article was actually nice and clear, but no, turns out, there are other ways to not join an alliance. A few of which I recently experienced. So, somehow, here are more ways on how you can not join an alliance. Don’t try and immediately keg your ally. If you want to join an alliance, then you should try not to harm them in any way.… [Continue Reading]

Things You Shouldn’t Do When Approaching A Rank 5 Reaper Galleon

A rank 5 Reaper Galleon is probably one of the scarier things you can come across while sailing. Being rank 5 with the Reaper’s Bones emissary, they can see every other emissary on the map, and have plenty of reasons to attack other players, while having the manpower to do so. You definitely can take down a rank 5 Reaper Galleon, and they’re not perfect players, but with 4 people on board, lots of cannon balls, three masts that need to be broken to immobilize them and the ability to ignore a lot of top level damage. So, if you’re… [Continue Reading]

On Replaying The Monkey Island Tall Tales

The other day, we were meant to go sailing as Reapers, but half the team never turned up. We kinda tend to avoid using sloops because they’re less fun, and because I get 2 minute respawn timers, one death tends to fuck me up entirely. But rather than not doing anything at all, Bacxaber and I decided to go and redo The Lair of LeChuck, since we both needed to replay it for a stupid cosmetic. When the Monkey Island tall tales came out, they came with a bunch of commendations but not really any rewards. For completing the last… [Continue Reading]

A Thought On Improving Emissary Competition in Sea of Thieves

In Sea of Thieves, we have six emissaries that we can sail under. However, despite being warned that emissaries are a target for enemy players, there’s kinda only really been one faction that’s designed to go around and hunt other emissaries. The Reaper’s Bones reward good gold if you bring them the flags of any other emissary ship, even other Reapers. Sure, there’s now the Hourglass battles between the Servants of the Flame and the Guardians of Fortune, but raising an Athena’s Fortune or Reaper’s Bones flag is optional, and flags are very easily lost due to the guaranteed win/loss… [Continue Reading]

Cheating in Sea of Thieves

If you have a multiplayer game, then you’ll stumble across cheaters. And, it turns out, Sea of Thieves has pretty much no anti-cheat system what so ever. Sure, Rare have said that they’re developing an anti-cheat system, but they’ve been saying that for a while. In the mean time, all you can really do is record other players that you suspect of cheating, then send videos to Rare for them to inspect. While having no anti-cheat in a sandbox game wouldn’t be too bad, there’s a whole PvP game mode (hourglass battles), PvP is encouraged in general, and there’s also… [Continue Reading]

What To Do If You’re Attacked On the Sea of Thieves

So you’re sitting there, quite happily emptying a vault after successfully finding a key. But oh no, there’s a ship on the horizon! What do you do? Well, unfortunately, you’re probably in trouble. Sure, you can try and talk your way out of a situation, but if a pirate wants blood, they’ll get it. So here are some handy common knowledge tips, in order to try and save yourself. I’d actually recommend against running, at least not for hours. If someone is coming to attack you, they’ll just keep on coming. I’ve been on both sides of the chase, and… [Continue Reading]

Sea of Thieves’ Season 10 Was Lame

I’m going to be straight here, Season 10 sucked. There was hardly anything in it. We got some numbers, a single world event and a copy of an existing game mode. That was it. Nothing else. Let’s start with guilds. While guilds are indeed cool, they are mostly just some numbers that go up, and the ability to use your friends’ ships, if they allow you to. Sure, there’s some progression and unlocked tied to it, but 99% of guilds is invisible once you’re in game. The only gameplay-affecting part is when you get to rank 15 and unlock the… [Continue Reading]
