Not So Great Expectations

The other night, I watched a film called I, Frankenstein. It was a very silly film, not in an intended comedic sense but in a way where people who review films will just sigh and point out every single bad bit until they get bored and start talking about how Slumdog Millionaire changed the world or whatever. Nonetheless, despite its bad reviews, I sat down and watched it and I quite enjoyed it. Alright, the film was nothing special, the plot was basically Van Helsing, Dogma, Dracula, John Dies At The End and every other similar god-monster-demon-related film put together,… [Continue Reading]

Creating the Daily SPUF Steam Group.

As many of you may know, the Daily SPUF now has a Steam Group. We’ve posted several blog posts and have been discussing our thoughts on them in the Discussion forum.   But, I’m sure many of you may be wondering how it came into being. Why did I create it? Why not aabicus?   Well sit down and I’ll tell you a funny story on how it went that way.       In the middle of the night with nothing to do, I decide to browse Steam a bit. Out of sheer boredom, I decide to browse SPUF… [Continue Reading]

Team Fortress Classic Soldier and HWGuy

The ultimate migratory classes for TF2 vets who are first trying the game. I don’t know what much to say about them, they play almost identically to their TF2 counterparts, and if you don’t change your playstyle in the slightest you won’t really go wrong. Here are some generic tips though: 1. Rebind your slot 5 weapon to slot 4. Just a suggestion, it really helped me. In TFC, there are actually 5 weapon slots, but no class uses more than 4 of them. I’ve never really understood the logic by which Valve chose each weapon to link to which… [Continue Reading]

Spy Melees and You!

This message will self destruct in 3… 2… 1…  Nah, just kidding. Instead, I’m here to discuss the various shivs you can drive between the shoulder blades of your hapless foes as TF2’s conniving, dashingly handsome rogue, The Spy. Sorry to step on the toes of Chevap666, but I haven’t seen one of these in a while, and figured “hey, there isn’t one for The Spy yet!”   The Butterfly Knife (And it’s Reskins: The Saxxy, The Black Rose, and the Sharp Dresser): The most magnanimous and recognizable of the Spy’s melees is also his default, and is a wonderfully serviceable weapon.… [Continue Reading]

The Future No More

To all stakeholders of the SPUFserver: It is with solemn regret that I must announce the indefinite suspension of operations for the SPUFserver, effective May 18th, 2014. For a while now, it has been apparent that the SPUFserver has not been receiving any significant traffic outside of specially organized events, and even that traffic has been minimal with waning community participation. Even with the cost optimizations that we have performed, server administration is still not a cheap venture, and there is no justification for keeping up a server which is not seeing any use. Thus, I have come to the… [Continue Reading]

Some Tips for Underwater Combat

I love underwater combat, and a recent run of pl_underwater_rainy has given me a lot of practice with it. Here are some things I’ve learned about fighting in Davy Jones’ locker. (Also, apologies for the fuzzy pictures; it turns out TF2 Replay doesn’t like photos taken underwater.) 1) Understand which of your weapons don’t work underwater. This is pretty basic, but you don’t want to waste valuable time trying to fire your Huntsman or stun with your Sandman only to find out they don’t work. Rule of thumb, things that involve taunts don’t work, so no stun, no Holiday Punching,… [Continue Reading]

A Battle of Healers – The TF2 Medic VS The TFC Medic

Let us be frank here: The Medic we all love dearly is hugely different from the healing class in many, many other games. There are few places where the most important person on your team is the person healing you and your team and keeping everyone alive by making health bars go up instead of go down. So I decided to have a think about this. How would our Medic do fighting against other healers? Before we begin, a clarification. The Team Fortress 2 Medic was designed with teamwork in mind. He’s almost helpless on his own. That being said,… [Continue Reading]

Advice for Playing TFC Scout

TFC Scout has a lot in common with his Boston counterpart, but he emphasizes completely different parts of the Scout class role. Notably, he is even faster than TF2 Scout, but packs hardly a punch in combat. No meatshots, or moonshots, or really any sort of meaningful shots from this merc. Here’s what you gotta know: 1) You are a flagrunner true and true. Unlike Medic, who can flagrun, heal, infect, and kill all in the same life, you are a fragile speedster who better run away from everything. Your loadout is completely built around getting the heck out of… [Continue Reading]

Why Scout Needs a Nailgun

In my article “5 Things I miss From Team Fortress Classic“, I gave the very first spot on the list to its nailgun. Every time I’m stuck as Scout seeing a sentry around a corner, but with no means of dealing with it myself, I wish Valve hadn’t taken my simple and easy way to get rid of that darn thing. The TFC nailgun is most comparable to the TF2 Syringe gun, with a major difference: no gravity falloff on the projectiles, meaning that they fly in a straight line forever like a rocket. This lets you deal basically a… [Continue Reading]

SPUF Server Going Away Party

As some of you may know, the SPUFserver is shutting down in a week. And so, I’ll be hosting a go-away party so the server will have one last hurrah before dying off 4ever. This is not a formal event. There will be no custom maps, no special plugins, just plain old vanilla TF2*. The goal is to keep the server as full as we can for as long as we can. Because this is no ordinary event, I plan on having it all day. Which means, I (or some other mod/admin) will be pumping out event notifications periodically throughout… [Continue Reading]
