Season of the Haunted – Moon’s Haunted, the Sequel

The Moon in Destiny 2 is a scary place. It’s nothing but ruins, infested with crimson-armoured Hive. All across the planet, dimly glowing ghosts linger around, trapped and lost. The only thing worth going there for is to kill lots of Hive in a cold, desolate space. And to make matters worse, it turns out there’s a massive dark pyramid buried under the Moon’s surface. While it remains dormant, there have been rumbles of darkness leaking out, and the whole environment is a dangerous mess.

But somehow, with Destiny 2’s Season of the Haunted, the Moon has only gotten scarier.

The Leviathan returns

If the word “Leviathan” sounds familiar in D2 context, that’s because we’ve seen it before. The Leviathan is a colossal ship that loomed over the planet Nessus, which disappeared at some point. When I say “colossal”, I do actually mean colossal. The Leviathan is a ship that could eat and destroy planets, then turn whatever remained into (probably some very yucky) wine. However, Leviathan was also the home of a raid of the same name, where players would defeat Emperor Calus.

However, afterwards, the Leviathan disappeared, and no one really knew what happened to it. Up until it came back and appeared by the Moon. Its hunger had called out and been answered by the dormant Pyramid on the Moon.

Returned but Derelict

When the Leviathan arrived though, it was not the same as it used to be. There was still plenty of golden splendor but everything else was abandoned, a strange, unknown plant growing through the colossal ship. On the ship were both handfuls of Cabal still loyal to Calus, as well as a bunch of Scorn, all of whom want to get some of that sweet sweet darkness power.

The Leviathan itself though has seen far better days. What was once gold and opulent is now overgrown with weird fungi. This causes a weird sort of nostalgia, mainly because the arenas and encounters from the old Leviathan Raid are now free to roam through. The Leviathan isn’t a raid any more, it’s an area we can run around in, filled with loyalists and nightmares, touched by the darkness. Although I’ve noticed that you can’t ride Sparrows in the rather large area.

Really, the entire location is a nostalgia trip for those who did the original raid. It’s not exactly the same though. You can wander aimlessly between the areas, but it’s not that open to exploration. There’s no map, the whole destination is kinda trapped inside a repeating public event.

Getting tired of all these Scorn.

In the mean time, because someone uttered the word “darkness”, we also now have a ton of Scorn running around. Frankly, I’m getting a bit tired of them. While they kinda fit inside the Throne World, since Rhulk invited them there, I’m not sure why they’re suddenly here on the Leviathan. Well, I know exactly why they are there. After all, they are tied to the Darkness right now. But it would have been nice to have a little less Scorn, as they also appeared in Season of the Lost and were featured heavily in the Witch Queen campaign.

Either way though, the new Derelict Leviathan is a really cool place to explore. Can’t wait to see where this all goes…
