The Mega Sandwich
Everyone enjoys some sort of sandwich. Whether it’s a humble peanut butter and jam, to a filling burito, all the way to questionable sandwiches like burgers and hotdogs, there is a sandwich for everyone. One of my personal favourites is the egg mayo sarnie. However, today I will be talking about the MEGA SANDWICH.
Basically, it’s a sandwich that uses a whole loaf of bread.
The Mega Sandwich is very simple. Rather than using slices of bread, we hollow out a loaf of bread and stick in all the stuff you’d normally put into a standard sandwich. But how you go ahead to do this depends on what you can get from the shops. Luckily, I can get an uncut loaf pretty easily, and our loaf of bread of choice is what we call “village bread”. It’s a big, round loaf, which you can easily cut the top off, peel open and start pulling out all that soft stuff inside. Make sure that you keep the bread lid from slicing off the top of the loaf.
You don’t want to scrape things out completely. We need a soft inner wall to soak up any liquids that might ooze out. Plus, we need to butter the insides of the Mega Sandwich. What butter or spreadable stuff you use is up to you. I like to make garlic butter, because I’m fancy and also love anything garlic-y. It’s also great protection from vampires. But using your normal butter is fine.
Then there is the sandwich filling. Frankly, you can go completely wild. The last Mega Sandwich I made, it was filled with edam cheese and sliced turkey ham. I also stuck in some nacho cheese sauce l, because why not? But you can use pretty much any filling.
The only thing you need to keep in mind though is that the filling needs to be cooked. Turns out, bread can be a pretty good insulator, meaning that the insides don’t cook very fast. You’re better off frying your bacon in advance, so it doesn’t come out raw. So make sure that your ingredients are fully cooked before slamming your Mega Sandwich into the oven. Making sure that you put the bread lid back on.
As to how long it can take to bake, it really depends on the bread. Using my traditional village loaf of bread, I put it in the oven at 200°C for 20-30 minutes, checking intermittently. You might want to wrap the mega sandwich in aluminum foil, but I have found that it doesn’t make much difference. The best way to tell if the mega sandwich is one is checking underneath the lid, and seeing if the cheese you put in has melted. If you don’t have cheese in yours, you might need to stick a knife through it, to see if it is hot in the centre.
Once the Mega Sandwich is done, get it out of the oven, and let it sit for a moment. Then, with a big, serrated bread knife, slice the Mega Sandvich into big, hearty sliced. It’s best eaten as soon as possible, while the cheese is still melty.
But yeah, that’s basically it. You can much more easily just making a normal sandwich, bit this is way more fun!
