Shoot whoever’s wearing a different coloured shirt!

Team-based games, be it the UEFA Champions League or FootLOL: Epic Fail League, do the sensible thing of having the teams wear team jerseys of different colours. After all, as a spectator sport, it makes sense to do this since the audience can now easily tell who’s on what team. For the players, it allows them to immediately tell whether to pass the ball to the person in front of him or to try and knock his teeth out with the ball. And this concept, of course, goes into video games. For example, in TF2, the teams wear team-coloured clothing. Just… [Continue Reading]

Cold Killer

The Cold Killer is a thick white hood for the Sniper. It also gives Sniper a white cap, winter goggles and a white undershirt. Since Sniper is born and raised in Australia, sending him to cold places like Coldfront is about as comfortable for him as keeping a camel in a fridge. Thus, some nice, thick clothing is probable pretty welcomed by him. the goggles are a nice touch too, reducing the glare from snow so that he can actually see properly in snowy environments without blinding himself. The first official map featuring snow is Viaduct in August 13, 2009. The… [Continue Reading]

The Crosslinker’s Coil and more than a bit of digressing

The Crosslinker’s Coil is a promotional item for the game Gunpoint, modeled after the hat of the main character, Richard Conway. Since the game is 8-bit, I really can’t tell if this hat is a faithful reproduction of Conway’s hat or not. The Crosslinker’s Coil is named after the main gadget of the game, the Crosslink. It is a brown, leather wide-brimmed fedora. There is a coil of yellow wires at where a ribbon usually is, secured in place by black electrical tape. On the left side of the hat is a battery and switch compartment with two team-coloured batteries.… [Continue Reading]

Promoting TF2 with other Valve games

Heroes of the Storm is the Super Smash Bros for Blizzard’s franchises, as well as the company’s attempt to break into the lucrative MOBA market. And it’s not doing too well compared to its competition, which is sad since the genre was first born from Aeon of Strife, a StarCraft custom map, and it’s the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients that first popularized the genre. It’s just like how England invented football (it’s football, not soccer, come on America) and has only won once in the FIFA World Cup out of 20 games. So Blizzard decided to use their newest… [Continue Reading]

Paladins, Fanservice, and Waifus

First up, the line “I’m afraid it’s gonna attract horny 13 year olds” is hilarious. Not only are there much better games for that out there on Steam, the fact that said 13 year olds clearly have access to the Internet means that they should have access to much better sources of satisfaction if that is what they are after. But yes, this is a somewhat valid topic about Paladins. The female characters in the game are rather, erm, well-equipped if you see what I mean. Not to mention, going by the way they dress you would’ve assumed that the game… [Continue Reading]

Tea Talk: Team Fortress 2 in general

Team Fortress 2 is ten years old. Most people would’ve known this. But I feel that this point bears repeating. To be very honest, it isn’t exactly that easy to tell sometimes, since the stylized art ages pretty OK. But because it’s ten years old, it has understandably lost some of its luster. Every time a new game comes out, it’ll chip away at least a sliver of TF2’s playerbase. The game is fighting a battle of attrition against the rest of the gaming industry for 10 years. Aside from that, as more and more new names enter the arena,… [Continue Reading]

Tea Talk: Giving money to Paladins

I have not spent a single cent on Paladins. And that is strange, because I really don’t see why not. I really enjoy the game, I’m rather invested in it, and I like Hi-Rez. Somewhat. I did talk about how I feel that Hi-Rez’s business model feels exploitative. Granted, they did made grinding easier since then, but the grind still feels so painfully long. The new champion always seem just that little bit out of reach. And the whole time I was at the champion screen, the Founder’s Pack ad is at the side, silently taunting me for not giving… [Continue Reading]

Just Cause 2

Just Cause 2 is where all productivity goes to die. Really, the moment I bought the game, my productivity goes to hell. I can’t even be productive enough to complete in-game missions since I’m either doing the sidequests, hunting for collectibles, or simply just flying around the land. And I swear my body’s half as productive too. My eyes barely blink and I stop feeling hungry, so whenever I stopped playing after a long session I turned into a weeping, starving mess. This game is really, really pretty. The environment is gorgeous, rich, varied and filled with detail. You have… [Continue Reading]

Tea Talk: Developer hijinks

In general, despite me really hating their business model at times and feeling really iffy about their new VIP system in Paladins, I like Hi-Rez. The devs actually put a lot of effort and love into developing the game. Paladins have been growing rather well, its community vibrant, its playerbase number is rather respectable (though we won’t know the actual player count since you can launch Paladins directly through Hi-Rez’s launcher instead of going through Steam), and its eSports scene is growing. This is in no small part due to Hi-Rez’s continuous efforts to develop and promote the game. But that… [Continue Reading]

Gunpoint

I have a soft spot for stealth games, although I’m not very good at them. The appeal of quietly sneaking around, sight unseen, taking out every guard with surgical precision to clear your part to the objective is rather unique. It contains both the methodical approach required by puzzle games as well as the heart-stopping anticipation of horror games. There is a rhythm, with bursts of actions in between long silences, as dictated by the movement of the enemies on the map. Gunpoint is definitely one of the more action-y stealth games I’ve played, though. Compared to Mark of the… [Continue Reading]
