On Sound Cues

Playing Left 4 Dead 2 recently made me realize something. The sounds and music in that game and its predecessor Left 4 Dead 1 are absolutely amazing. Really, the more I think about it, the more I feel the sound direction is what ties the game together and gives both the game and the player direction without being in your face. You see, in Left 4 Dead, there’s not a huge amount of actual music. All the music comes from the many sound cues from your environments as you walk by. You know when there’s a tank coming, not just… [Continue Reading]

Becoming Obsessed with Frost Again

So a while back, Frost Prime was released as a Warframe bonus for Twitch Prime. He’d been re-vaulted a while back, and alongside the Soma Prime and Scindo Prime, was always a well-rounded frame, so as a free Warframe, Frost Prime was perfect for the huge amount of new players looking to try something other than Excalibur, Volt and Mag. Of course, because you could get these items with the Twitch Prime trial and a valid credit/debit card, it meant that almost everyone had Frost Prime. Unfortunately, this meant that everyone was using Frost Prime, and there simply wasn’t enough… [Continue Reading]

Medical Necessity – A Final Update

Hi everybody! A few weeks ago our most recent dev diary went live for Medical Necessity, and unfortunately, it will also be our last. As our final project for the quarter, every team needed to showcase their progress during pre-production and demonstrate that they have a schedule for finishing production in the next three months. Unfortunately, the judges decided that the game we were working on wasn’t in a state worth continuing. They mentioned that the game’s core concept seemed ‘self-contradictory’, in that the player didn’t have enough control over the gameplay and that led to the game not being fun.… [Continue Reading]

Zaws – Build Your Own Weapons in Warframe

The Plains of Eidolon brought with them a lot of content, a lot of which I never really got around to covering. One of the more prominent features was the ability to build your own weapons, using a combination of set parts. It’s a strange system, something that allows you to have a lot of creativity, but at the same time isn’t actually that creative. Actually I take that back. Zaws can be kinda creative. But there’s work to be had. First off, a Zaw comes in three parts. A pointy bit you hit things with (the strike), the blunt… [Continue Reading]

The Sun-on-a-Stick

The Sun-on-a-Stick is a rather unpopular weapon. It is a rather pointless weapon. I mean, just look at its weapon attributes: The 25% fire damage resistance was added during the Meet Your Match Update in an attempt to buff it. It seems nice, but when you can outrun the Pyro there is not much point in having fire damage resistance. Besides, the Mad Milk is available to extinguish afterburn. The 100% critical hit VS burning players is the main attribute that people take note of, but there are two main problems with this attribute. Since Scout has no way of doing… [Continue Reading]

A Quick Guide to 1 Hour Survival Fissures

Sometimes you need to open relics and fast. You’ve got a mountain of relics and Baro Ki’Teer’s coming tomorrow and you have no idea what to do. Alright, sure, you could do Capture and Exterminate missions, but you lose a lot of time between loading screens. Defense and Excavation missions offer endless rewards, but enemies are slow and often hide. Nope, if you want to open a relic every 5 minutes, you’ll want to do a marathon Survival Fissure. With the right set up, you can easily go for an hour or longer. And this is a quick guide on… [Continue Reading]

From Civilian to Messiah – A God Complex Towards Freeman

After playing Half-Life a bit more, browsing through Half-Life 2 maps in GMod, re-reading what is basically Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and watching a large array of Half-Life content, I’ve realised something. The more you play Half-Life, the more people begin to worship Gordon Freeman. And that bothers me. As I re-watched the delightful series Freeman’s Mind, I was reminded by an argument a friend of mine came up with. In Half-Life 1 and the other goldsrc games, you’re just a person who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Half-Life 2 and onwards, you’re… [Continue Reading]

Why Heavy?

While a large portion of the newer players may struggle to see the appeal in playing Medic, most of the older players feel the same about playing Heavy. A lot of people just see him as a glorified mobile Sentry and occasional Sandvich dispenser, or a tremendous waste of space on a team a full-time universal Sandvich dispenser and nothing else. However, to me, Heavy is one of my go-to classes when a solid damage dealer is needed, perhaps more so to me than Soldier. I find that, while Soldier does have a much higher skill ceiling and is overall… [Continue Reading]

Plague Star Has Returned!

From April 5th to April 17th, Plague Star is back, bringing Infested and a massive, hideous lump of cancerous matter to the middle of the Plains of Eidolon. The event is a platform-wide operation, affecting the Plains no matter what if you’re on PC, and is probably coming back to Console versions in 2-3 weeks. The way Plague Star works is pretty much the same as last time. You grab the Infested Catalyst blueprint from your Clan Dojo, you build some and equip them in your gear slot, you accept the bounty from Konzu in Cetus, you head out to… [Continue Reading]

Pacific Rim: Uprising – Review!

As a pre-birthday treat, I got to see Pacific Rim: Uprising with the family on the 31st. And it was a good movie. Genuinely a bit of fun. The story follows on from the previous Pacific Rim, being set 10 or so years later after the big victory. They’re still using Jaegars for various bits and pieces, mainly just policing but only seem to have like 5 of them total. And there’s enough scrapyards everywhere that some random kid manages to build a small, single-pilot one. Anyway, there’s been no activity but they’re still training people just in case and… [Continue Reading]
