The Luckiest Magikarp in a Dynamax Raid

For a while now, I kinda forgot that I had a Nintendo Switch. It sat in its bag on my desk, gathering a little bit of dust as I continued to not use it. I did plan to do a play-through of Animal Crossing, but, frankly, it would be pretty boring. All that aside, I opened up Pokemon Shield, to see what my party was doing. For some reason, my entire team, aside from my starter, were poison types. Anyway, weird team composition aside, I noticed that I was in Hammerlocke, one of the two places connected to the wild… [Continue Reading]

Does Anyone Actually Like Needing 400 Candy To Evolve A Pokemon?

There are a few Pokemon in the Pokemon universe that start off as small and weak, then evolve into something amazing. Magikarp is probably the most famous for this*. It’s a weak fish that only knows Tackle and Splash, and if you have the patience, you can evolve it into a massive sea not-a-dragon. Normally, in the main Pokemon games, you need to level the Pokemon despite it having awful moves. But the grind is worth it because you get a cool new badass Pokemon. In Pokemon GO however, you can evolve these Pokemon without having them in battle. It… [Continue Reading]

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Walking a Magikarp

Magikarp is the best Pokemon. People call it a joke, but it’s the best thing around. Some Magikarp are so good that they can flip-flop over hills and leap over mountains. When a Magikarp grows tired of being awesome, it then evolves into a Gyarados, a massive flying sea serpent. One that can mega evolve into a monstrous dark water beast. Magikarp is also cool in Pokemon GO. Except that it takes 400 candy to evolve into Gyarados. No need to worry though, you’ll get that candy, don’t you worry! Anyway here are 5 reasons why you should walk a… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Bonus Part 6

Yesterday we witnessed a drugged-out fish stumble drunkenly through the Elite Four like a bull in a china shop. Most champions would hang up the gloves and retire to a life of meditation and peaceful tranquility…but our hero is no ordinary karp. After being crowned the reigning titleholders of Kanto, Magikarp and I experience a credits-themed fever dream and regain consciousness outside mom’s house in Pallet Town. Our first objective is clear; there was a trainer in Victory Road whose Grass team was so chonky that I couldn’t defeat her even at level 100. Now that I’d beaten the game… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Part 5

Magikarp has traveled the entire Kanto region, defeating countless opponents and overcoming far more obstacles than most fish, not the least of which being his own stubborn refusal to obey his trainer. And now, finally, our hero’s journey is reaching its pinnacle. The best trainers in the league are waiting for his challenge in Indigo Plateau. But first we need to beat our rival one last time to gain access to Victory Road. Blue’s team is finally coming into its own, with a full team of six Pokemon and several that hit incredibly hard, especially the Alakazam and Blastoise (you… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Part 4

Last time our heroes wrapped up their business in Saffron City and are now beginning their hike down the docks from Lavender Town. The fights here aren’t too difficult, especially due to most of the enemy trainers being Fisherman with not-very-effective water-type moves. The docks emerge into Route 13, where we navigate a maze-like series of fence posts funneling us into various fights more difficult than the sort we’ve faced up till now. This is the part of the game where we start encountering a lot more high-quality trainers, like Beauties, Cooltrainers and Bird Keepers. It’s also where we can… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Part 3

Once again, we rejoin our heroes in Vermillion City after having beaten Lt. Surge. Magikarp and his flunkies will soon be heading for Route 11 to Diglett Cave, but we need to do some housekeeping before setting out. At the Pokemon Fan Club we listened to the chairman’s tale and received a Bike Voucher, then stopped by the Fishing Guru to collect an Old Rod. This is the only fishing pole we’re going to grab this run, since it spawns only toothless Magikarp and I wanted a reliable method for burning away my Splash PP in case I ever needed… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Part 2

My journey with Magikarp began as most Pokemon adventures do; beating the pants off my rival. See, the best part of this run was always going to be the early game; since Magikarp’s only damage-dealing move, Dragon Rage, deals a fixed 40 damage, and nothing is going to have that much health for at least the first third of the game, I could sucker-punch anything I liked. Or at least I thought… The tutorial content went easily enough: visiting Viridian City, returning a parcel to Professor Oak, and reaching Viridian Forest. And while the poor Caterpie, Kakuna, and Metapod were… [Continue Reading]

Beating the First Game with the Worst Pokémon – Part 1

Author’s note: Today’s article sets the stage for my University Magikarp run through Pokémon Red. The rest of this year’s articles will chronicle the run itself! The Magikarp-Only Run is a staple of high-level Pokémon challenges, along with Nuzlocke runs, speedruns and no-damage runs. As Magikarp is infamously terrible and widely considered the worst Pokémon of all time, you’re always going to find people who want to solo a Pokémon game with it (along with a team of non-combat HM slaves). And indeed, you can find successful Magikarp runs throughout the internet for every generation of Pokémon. Except one. Pokémon… [Continue Reading]

Thoughts on the December Community Weekend of 2020

December Community Day events are always interesting. Unlike previous months, which featured one Pokemon, December ones feature the whole year’s lineup. In 2018, this was quite a treat, as the Pokemon in the 2018 community days were ALL incredibly good. 2019 was also pretty good, since the 2018 Pokemon were in raids and eggs, and, again, almost all the 2019 featured Pokemon were great. Aside from Slakoth. 2020 though is a different story. Most of 2020’s community days have been… weird. The Pokemon are almost ALL Kanto ones. The only exceptions are Piplup and Seedot. Everything else is completely Kanto,… [Continue Reading]
