Dead Articles

Being a new year and a new decade, sometimes I think about clearing out all the backlogs and finishing off a lot of unfinished stuff. After all, every time I log in to the Daily SPUF to write an article, I am met with the same old message, the same reminder that there are nearly a hundred articles sitting in the Drafts section, unwanted and unloved. The same goes for the Pending section, which is currently sparsely populated with four mediocre backup articles that I can schedule if I really fuck up and don’t have anything else to publish. But… [Continue Reading]

Parodies VS Tropes – The Strange Differences in Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch Characters

Call me biased, but I’ve always believed that the characters in Team Fortress 2 are better than the characters in Overwatch. I’m not talking about skills or abilities or guns or playstyles or anything like that. A lot of those things are far more subjective and depend highly on the game you want to play. But when it comes to the characters and personalities of these games, there is a vast gap between what makes the TF2 classes who they are and what Overwatch’s heroes have become. To do this though, we have to understand the difference between a parody… [Continue Reading]

Running Out of Steam

It turns out, we missed two milestones here on the Daily SPUF and I didn’t even notice. The 2200th and 2300th articles whizzed by and I was completely oblivious to it all, and now we’re closing in on 2400 articles. In fact, the 2400th article is only a few days away and I don’t have anything prepared. I don’t even have any plans for a 2500th article aside from writing about it. Of course you readers were all oblivious to it all as well because the only thing that says how many published articles we have is on the admin… [Continue Reading]

In Which Medic Writes Stories

Oh no. It’s me again. aabicus did an amazing job giving me a break and allowing me to build a bit of a backlog of articles, so I wasn’t desperately writing and publishing things. But aabicus has things to do as well, so we’re back to little old Medic pumping out content with no end in sight. So yay, I guess? That’s kinda belittling to me though. I do so much writing, all in part of an insane bid to write 500 words every day until the day I die. As I am typing this sentence, I have this article… [Continue Reading]

The Eternal Quest for More Fonts

I have too many fonts. Too, too many fonts. As it stands, I have about 8000 files in my Fonts folder. It has reached a point where the drop down window in Adobe Illustrator no longer works, because I simply have too many fonts. Or it might be because there’s one or two corrupted mods in there somewhere and I’m too lazy to go through all 8000 fonts and find which one it is. These fonts cause issues in other programs too. I can’t change the font in Windows Movie Maker without causing a five minute hang and MS Paint… [Continue Reading]

Writing About Random Themes and the Power of Random Topic Generators

I’ve run into a problem. I’ve not really been playing games lately. The only game I have been playing as of late has been Minecraft, on a Pixelmon server that recently had an update that gave cool rewards based on the amount of Pokemon you have caught or bred. But even that is a limited thing because I’ve somehow managed to catch 95% of all Pokemon (all 809 of them) and the only ones left are the Legendaries which are insanely hard to obtain. Even if I was playing regularly though, I still wouldn’t have a lot to talk about.… [Continue Reading]

Writing VS Roleplaying

Who’d have thought that there was an actual difference between writing and roleplaying? Well, a lot of people, really. Those who read the Daily SPUF regularly might know that I do a lot of writing. By “a lot”, I mean at least 500 words a day, often more, and have been doing so for the last 3 years. Lately, I’ve been doing 1000+ words a day simply because someone around here has to keep the Daily SPUF daily rather than weekly. In fact, this desperation to make sure that the Daily SPUF has an article published every single day means… [Continue Reading]

Writing About Writers’ Block

It’s probably a testament to writers’ block just how long this article has sat here, all empty and quiet. There are other article drafts that have sat around for longer, many of which are leftovers from the golden years of SPUF (rest in peace) written and started by people who never came back and will never be finished. Some of those articles may end up getting adopted one day, but as far as I’m concerned, they’re just part of the baggage around here now. They were still there when we hit 2000 articles and now we’re straying further and further… [Continue Reading]

Three Years of Five Hundred Words

On December 31st 2018, I finished my third year in a row of writing 500 words a day. Every day since January 1st 2016, I have written at least 500 words a day, writing a coherent, complete article or short story with a precise beginning and end. I’ve done this without fail, even when I’ve not been at home or not had access to a keyboard, computer or laptop. In fact, most of the time I manage to write at least 600 words a day, and very often I’ll write more, sometimes writing two 500 word articles or even one… [Continue Reading]

On WordPress 5.0

WordPress 5.0 came out late November. Not long afterwards, WordPress 5.0.1 and WordPress 4.9.9 came out to address a bunch of security issues. Not long after that, WordPress 5.0.2 was released to deal with some bugs. Now, normally I update WordPress as soon as I can, after checking that there’s nothing weird. All my WordPress installations are set up to automatically download and do security updates, but it’s worth checking before you do a major update just in case a plugin is no longer compatible. Most plugin authors will want to update their work as well, so you’ll always end… [Continue Reading]
