What Aftermath?

Yes, I know I’ve been writing a lot about the New War, but there is so much to unpack. After all, it is a long quest that takes at least 4-5 hours to finish. Today’s article though features the aftermath of the New War. Or rather, a lack of one.

Warning, mild spoilers ahead! Turn back now if you don’t wish to be spoiled.

Something is bothering me when it comes to the New War. Despite all the carnage and distraction, the latest quest’s completion feels like, well, not amazing. For a quest where the whole solar system gets taken over, we actually don’t see that much of an aftermath. I was actually expecting way more devastation. What we got instead is pretty concerning, but feels like a hollow victory.

Despite all that’s happened, not much has changed.

Murex on the star chart

The first thing you notice after the New War is the damage. Not the damage to planets, but the dead, floating Murex that hangs around each planet. The Sentients tried to take over everything at once and did a good job doing so. However, the Murex ships we see are all dark and dead. It’s as if someone forgot to pay the electricity bill and the Murex all shut down.

However, once you’re in a mission, it’s as if nothing has changed. The Corpus and Grineer still want to murder you and the Infested didn’t even notice that the Sentients had invaded. While it IS curious that there are dead (or maybe hibernating) Murex everywhere, no one actually talks about them.

The main damage is in the Open World areas.

Both the Orb Vallis and the Plains of Eidolon aren’t looking so hot currently. While the ice is melting outside of Fortuna, the Plains of Eidolon are covered in bits of dead Sentient. It’s also possible to see the damaged Orokin Tower, the Unum, which rests just outside of Cetus. It’s mostly damaged and under repair. Really, the Plains are by far the most damaged. Even while inside Cetus, you can see the destruction quite clearly.

The Orb Vallis on the other hand, is starting to look like a much more accessible place. Mostly because the ice seems to be melting. After taking over the area, the Sentients seem to have damaged or altered the coolant towers, so the whole area is starting to warm up. There is new growth and large swathes of snow-less areas and maybe, eventually, this part of Venus may become suitable for normal life.

At least Eucido is taking things seriously.

Speaking of Narmer, the only Narmer that we can see are the ones in the Narmer Bounties on Cetus and Fortuna. Konzu and Eudico both say that they’re a threat, but the way they act is almost like complete opposites. Eudico knows that the Narmer could continue to spread, even with their leaders gone. She was clearly badly affected during the New War and remains paranoid, especially since Nef Anyo doesn’t care about the Narmer.

Back in Cetus though, Konzu doesn’t seem that bothered. It’s business as usual for everyone in Cetus, and Konzu is quite satisfied by having Tenno drop by to do Narmer bounties. He always says “you know what to do”, and he’s right, we do.

As for the Narmer themselves? Well, they’re kinda… not there. We see them in the Narmer bounties, but it’s just Grineer or Corpus with gold bits on their heads. Basically the same as the Corrupted but with less gold, and with only one faction. There is pretty much no trace at all of anything other than Narmer. No Sentients, no Deacons, no new Archons, nothing. Maybe we’ll see more Narmer later on, but for now, the aftermath of the New War is kinda… forgettable…
