The Light Machine Gun Plight

LMGs have always been a misunderstood and under-appreciated weapon genre in first-person shooters. Whereas mechanically they fill an obvious role in the sniper rifle>assault rifle>machine gun progression tree, in practice they’re often left off the list entirely or locked into specialist roles due to lack of developer support. Mechanically, LMGs focuses on spewing huge magazines of high-damage bullets very inaccurately. In theory its wielder assumes a suppressive fire role, ensuring that somebody is still firing while all the more-accurate teammates are reloading. Unfortunately its often the case that devs shoulder the LMG with a whole host of downsides; I can… [Continue Reading]

The 3 Best Payday 2 DLCs

(Updated Janury 8th to reflect changes to the game) Payday 2 has a lot of DLC. A lot of them cost money. One of the first things I had trouble figuring out after I decided that I liked the game was which DLC are worth the five-dollar price tag, and the first conclusion I drew was “none of them.” The base game has all sorts of cool options for the enterprising heister with a perfectly fine arrangement of weapon types, weapon mods, and maps to run around testing out your guns. Even then, you can play DLC maps by joining public… [Continue Reading]

Payday 2 and Things Lost in Translation

I’m constantly having to explain to my friends how I could like Payday:The Heist better than Payday 2. The second game is a popular rollicking juggernaut with developer support, dozens of heists and weapons, customization options to rival TF2, and a huge player base. The first game has a mere nine heists, 13 weapons and nobody plays it anymore. It isn’t nostalgia; I had over 100 hours in the sequel before ever trying the first game. It’s not community-based; all of my friends play the sequel. I just really feel like Overkill Software lost track of some tiny things that hurt the whole package of… [Continue Reading]

Last Day to get Fractured Space free on Steam!

Do you like space combat games? Or do you just like getting free games that other people will have to spend money on? Well, Fractured Space has been free to download for the last two days, and if you get it before the free weekend ends, you get to keep it forever! Fractured Space combines the frantic fast-paced combat of a shooter with the global forward-thinking elements of a real-time strategy. In the one game I played, the strategy mostly manifested in a guy named Nanda cursing endlessly at his team of level 1 captains who wouldn’t leave home base. I’m… [Continue Reading]

One Last Heist…

…until I can go Infamous. That’s what I told myself as I broke into the ATM at the Four Stores convenience mart and waited for the escape vehicle. Despite my best efforts to dislike the blatant grinding aspects of Payday 2, the lure of the co-op Left 4 Dead 2-inspired gameplay and the TLC (and DLC) the devs showered the game with on a weekly basis was too much to ignore. Somehow, despite still feeling like a complete newbie to the world of bank robbery I had reached the $200 million required funds in my offshore account, and after this ATM I’d… [Continue Reading]

Team Fortress 2 Weapons in Skyrim

This is one of those “does what it says on the tin title” articles, but if you’re in the mood for really utterly breaking the lore (and perhaps the law) in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, then this article is for you. First off, where do you get this glorious add on? Simple. The Steam Workshop. As much as the Nexus Mod Manager and all that are great, just clicking “subscribe” works well too. I found these mods by typing TF2 into the search bar. There are three addons for the TF2 weapons, a melee add on, a crossbow add… [Continue Reading]

Confusion muses about bugs in: Fallout New Vegas

All games have bugs. Glitches or exploits, they make the game interesting, as long as they don’t crash the game or make it unplayable. You played a game as big and as long as I have played Fallout NV, you are bound to find a few amusing or noteworthy ones. The entire spectrum of error is full of unfriendly death laser, poor password protection and a demon performing brain surgery on you. Welcome to New Vegas. Enjoy your stay. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToKIkw3LIoQ&w=480&h=360] If you have heard of NV, one thing you probably probably know about is “That Daily Solar Deathray Laser”… [Continue Reading]
