Dark Spooky Forest Week: ARK Survival Evolved

I had the worst concievable opening experience with ARK Survival Evolved. I was grumpy at unrelated real-life things, so when my boyfriend created a private server and insisted I give the game a fair shake, I was hypercritical about not being able to instantly figure out how anything worked. How do I build a campfire? Why is it different how you gather wood from trees vs berries from bushes? Why’s it so bloody dark at night that I can’t see a damn thing? This game sucks! Flashforward two years later, and I have what feels like a lifetime of stories… [Continue Reading]

Dark Spooky Forest Week: Alan Wake

This is not my first article to mention Alan Wake. (You’re gonna see me say that a lot about the games this week.) It’s one of only two games that I enjoyed enough to finish replaying on the hardest difficulty, and I’ve played a lot of games so that’s really saying something. (Though admittedly I did have developer commentary on). Alan Wake was released in 2010 by Remedy Studios, who are most well-known for the Max Payne series, and if you’ve played them you’ll feel quite at home with Alan Wake’s movement/shooting mechanics. The plot is unashamedly inspired by Stephen… [Continue Reading]

Welcome to ‘Dark Spooky Forest’ Week!

Hey all! As described a while back, Medic has left me in charge of the Daily SPUF for a while, which is why you’ve been seeing more articles from me than usual. Last time this happened, I did a “retrospective week” where I discussed old games that weren’t really in the public conscience anymore. This week, I want to do something similar, but with a focus on my personal favorite video game setting: dark and spooky forests. I am a total sucker for dark and spooky forests. Perhaps it was due to growing up in the city, when my dad… [Continue Reading]

The Other Kind of Lich

Most Liches in Warframe come in two variants. The first never lives for very long. After all, they have a weapon or an ephemera. Things that the Tenno want or need. These Liches get hunted down and either killed or traded away. We need those weapons to complete our collections or better weapons we already have. And Liches with Ephemeras aren’t worth much, but they can be sold on for a modest amount of Platinum. These Liches never live for very long. Most people will try and kill them as quickly as possible. The sooner you kill a Lich, the… [Continue Reading]

Glassmaker’s Conclusion isn’t That Satisfactory

The last part of Glassmaker is finally out, and, well, it’s all over, I guess. We get to finally confront Nihil and kick his ass. Except, well, we don’t. After doing yet another dumb clue scene, we can fight our final boss. Of course, we have to spend ages scanning a room for clues first. And then we have to do a jumping puzzle based on those clues. Then you can fight the boss. Yet again, being a Tenno in a Warframe doesn’t matter. The fight against Nihil is simple. You dodge the crystals he shoots from his head, pick… [Continue Reading]

The Weird Dead State that is Destiny 2’s In-game Communication

Like all modern games, Destiny 2 has an in-game chat function and in-game voice chat. The default settings are push-to-talk, but voice is enabled from the start, as is the chat feature. It’s just a feature that’s always there. After all, parts of Destiny 2 require communication and timing to complete. It’s not just mindless shooting. You need a chat feature, right? In a normal game, of course! In most games, even if you can’t use voice chat, some people will use text chat. If you have a hub area, some people may chat in it. To be fair, most… [Continue Reading]

Is There A Use to Mega Pokemon?

The other day, I saw my first practical use of someone using a Mega Pokemon in a raid. During a raid against Giratina, someone used a Mega Houndoom. Sadly, I was using Dragon types at the time, and because there were 15 people in the raid, it didn’t really do much. But the thought was nice, and Mega Houndoom is cool. However, just how worthwhile was that Mega Evolution? Let’s have a look. Step 1: obtaining your Mega Evolution To Mega Evolve your Houndoom for the first time, you need 200 candy. You get a maximum of 90 candy per… [Continue Reading]

A Random Drifloon Research Event

I’ve clearly not been paying much attention to Pokemon Go, because we have yet another community research event! This event, slap-bang in the middle of the Halloween event, is all about Drifloon! Drifloon is a cute little Pokemon that kidnaps kids if they mistake it for a real balloon. It also has the most adorable yellow and blue shiny ever, so I’m surprised that I nearly forgot about this event! Amazingly, I actually managed to get a shiny super early on. But since this research event also gives you lots of other cool rewards, it was still worth doing all… [Continue Reading]

Binding Crouch to M4/5 – The Best Thing I Ever Did in Warframe

In Warframe, you bullet jump a lot. And I mean a lot. In fact, you bullet jump so much that a daily Nightwave task is to bullet jump 150 times. That Nightwave task can be done in about 3-4 missions. Or, if you’re doing missions on Jupiter, even less. But bullet jumping can be awkward. While jumping normally is done with space, a bullet jump requires crouching and then jumping. There’s a lot of busy finger work when it comes to bullet jumping. It’s easy to get tired fingers. After all, whether you have crouch bound to Shift, Ctrl or… [Continue Reading]

Don’t Forget To Give Head Pats to Your Designers

Hi, I am Medic, and, despite the username, I am a graphic designer. That means I design graphics as part of my job. Now, graphic design isn’t the only thing I do. I am supposedly a multi-talented individual. Capable of doing lots of other things, like web design and writing as well. But graphic design is the skill I picked up the earliest. I had a copy of Corel Draw on my crappy computer when I was 11 and it all went downhill from there. Design is harder than it looks. At first glance, design seems to fall into two… [Continue Reading]
