PhlogistiCast official Casting Call – August 2014

Hello everybody! You may or not have noticed that this blog now has a podcast associated with it. Said podcast is called the PhlogistiCast, or Phlog for short. So far we have produced three episodes and plan to do at least nine more this year, all episodes are posted on our YouTube channel here. This podcast needs your help! One of the two hosts has left the show and I, Dekky, am searching for somebody to replace her. The job involves coming on Skype every weekend or so and helping me to interview a special guest, discussing a wide variety… [Continue Reading]

“I AM BULLETPROOF!!”

Misha the Heavy Weapons Guy gets a lot of bad press. Especially on this blog. I’ve seen articles trashing him and saying he’s failed as a class in TF2. They point out that, compared to classes like the Soldier, he has less weapons to choose from and few reliable ways to cover his main weakness, lack of speed. They say he’s boring to play and requires almost no skill. Poor Heavy has been hit hard by such critics. But slow down, all you Jarate-throwing Huntsman Snipers! No class in this game is a “failure.” The point of Team Fortress 2… [Continue Reading]

Battle of the Builders: Dell Conagher vs Nuparu

Hopefully you’re all familiar with Mr. Conagher, the convivial Engineer from TF2. He’s the chap with an orange hardhat, a rusty wrench and a clichéd southern accent. He possesses the amazing ability to drop a toolbox on the ground, hit it repeatedly with said wrench and transform it into a Dispenser, a Teleporter or a stationary Terminator. These buildings, in conjunction with a wide selection of whack-things and shooty-things, make our Engie a formidable ally. Today we shall put him in the arena with another famous Engineer, he who they call Nuparu. This guy is a Matoran villager from the… [Continue Reading]

“L’ingénieur est un espion!”

Don’t turn invisible and think you’re invincible: they’re completely different words. Don’t go running after the person you’re disguised as. Don’t try to backstab somebody in the front or while surrounded by a dozen other enemies. Don’t kill an Engineer if he has an operational Sentry nearby. Don’t think you can replace a Heavy and destroy the other team with L’étranger. Basic advice for budding Spies, wouldn’t you think? But like that Sniper who tries to shoot through glass, there doesn’t seem any end to the ignorance of newbie Spies. Now if you’re new to TF2 and you like the… [Continue Reading]

Pyro vs Machine

Time and again, I ask myself the same question. I spin in my sleep trying to answer it. When it’s finally time to log in and load up another MvM server, it springs to my mind again when I see another player use these five words: “We don’t need a Pyro.” If this statement is uttered I will either switch to Engineer (if I agree) or ask why we don’t need a Pyro. “Why,” ask I, “do we not need a Pyro?” An innocent enough question, surely. But on certain servers I’ve had a variety of Pyro-trashing results. Apparently some… [Continue Reading]

Engie’s secret best friend

Howdy! Today we’re gonna do things “Texas style,” or at least what new players such as myself like to do, which is find as many interesting new weapons as possible and leave our stock loadouts behind. Yeee-haw! Oh… dead again. But I was so sure my Crusader’s Crossbow would do the trick. Now we start again. Since I know Medic quite well, I hear a lot about how it’s bad to just equip new items as soon as you get them. Assuming a new weapon is better than the stock equivalent usually ends in a horrible death and/or ragequit. This… [Continue Reading]

“Snipin’s a good job mate”… just like being a nuclear physicist

Let’s get something straight. Our bushwhacking friend the Sniper, that lean, mean shooting machine, is an interesting class. He’s got more firepower than Pyro’s toaster and more attitude than a diving plane. His accent alone makes him a respectable character. Small wonder so many people like slipping into his sunnies when they first try out TF2. For the good of your team, DO NOT DO THAT. What we should all know already from movies, books and common sense is this. The job of a sniper requires high specialization, that is, a unique skill set. Snipers must have superhuman patience, an… [Continue Reading]

Pyromania 101 with the guy who used to hate Pyros

Something extraordinary has happened. I think Pyro might be my new favourite class. Hiya chaps and chapettes, I’m Dekky and I’ve been playing TF2 for about a year now. I’m still a “newbie,” let’s get that out of the way now. In the past year, I’ve been burnt to a crisp countless times, had my head bashed in with every axe and hammer in the game and been airblasted off many a cliff. I’ve never enjoyed having Pyros around and never had success when playing as one. In fact, when Medic interviewed me for this very blog, I said Pyro was… [Continue Reading]
