How to Turn Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) into a Single-Player Stealth Game

STAR WARS™: Battlefront Classic Collection just came out on Steam! I’ve mentioned in several places that the original Battlefront II was my very first gaming love, long before I’d ever played Team Fortress 2 or even created a Steam account. I never actually owned it, I played it (and its predecessor) exclusively on my friend’s Xbox, but our neighborhood gang racked up hundreds of hours playing them and they are incredible. Seriously, these two games are 500% worth playing, even if you just go buy the originals, they work perfectly and have tons of cool mods to boot. The gameplay is addicting and… [Continue Reading]

A New Username

Over the last few years, I’ve shifted away from the name Medic, instead taking on the name Retvik. My original online alias was Phovos, which isn’t always available since it’s an intentional misspelling of the word Phobos, the Greek word for ‘Fear’. The name Retvik on the other hand has always been pretty available in a lot of places, since it’s not really a name. In fact, the name Retvik comes from one of the protagonists from my fictional writing. But the thing is, I was never 100% sold on the name Retvik. I took it because my preferred names… [Continue Reading]

Disney’s Jungle Cruise: The Real-Life Conquistadors Behind the Villains

So I just watched Jungle Cruise, the newest adventure movie released by Disney and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It was a good popcorn flick, fun for the whole family etc. I was intrigued by its use of historical figures in the villainous roles. I guess everything below this line is technically spoilers, though they’re pretty tame in the grand scheme of things. The two main villains (Prince Joachim of Prussia and Lope de Aguirre, the 15th century conquistador) are both real people taken straight from the history books. And most of the internet has already discussed how thoroughly-fictionalized these… [Continue Reading]

5 Reasons to Use the Axe in Quake

Let’s get this out of the way; the Axe is a garbage weapon. Much like the Doom fist and the Wolfenstein knife before it, there are barely any reasons to bother with melee over the many ranged options. (In all honesty, your starting gun doesn’t fare much better. id’s design philosophy relies heavily on loadout variety, crafting weapons to serve different purposes, and the beginner weapons are always left by the wayside.) It’s so bad that it got removed completely in Quake II. However, due to Quake’s many gameplay elements, there are situational occasions where you might conceivably pull out the… [Continue Reading]

The Archaic Beauty That Is Windows Live Movie Maker

Aabicus has written an article about free tools for making videos and stuff like that. He’s a professional video editor these days. In fact, that’s aabicus’s main job now, editing and putting together videos. It’s a tough job that requires a lot of work and a lot of patience. Me on the other hand, I’m not a video editor. I’m actually not very good at video editing at all. In fact, I’m particularly stifled because I’ve never really had the… specs to do video editing. But the keen eye might notice that there ARE videos by me on the SPUF… [Continue Reading]
