The Sea in Sea of Thieves

When the title of your game has the word ‘sea’ in it, you can expect that it’s, well, going to have a sea. Hopefully a cool sea that actually works. The sea in Sea of Thieves is actually pretty damn impressive. It actually does kind feel like an actual sea. And I feel like that is worth talking about. When sailing, you can feel pretty much every wave. You splash up and down and even sideways. The boat rocks with the sea, depending on how harsh the sea is. You remain calm and steady in clear waters, which are generally… [Continue Reading]

Return of the Obra Dinn

I seem to have a habit of abandoning games due to frustration with the core gameplay mechanics, giving it another go 5+ years later, and only then getting completely hooked. It happened with Just Cause 2, World of Warcraft, Stardew Valley, ARK Survival Evolved, and now it’s happened with Return of the Obra Dinn, Lucas Pope’s latest bureaucracy-themed indie game. Set on an 1800s ghost ship that mysteriously returned to dock with none of its passengers or crew aboard, the player controls an insurance inspector who boards the vessel tasked with learning the fates of all 60 missing persons. The core… [Continue Reading]

D&D: Creative Uses for the ‘Shape Water’ Spell

Shape water is my favorite spell in D&D, hands down. I have found so many different ways to use it, in part because of the many different ways it lets you manipulate water. You can move it, animate it, recolor it, or freeze it, and the effect lasts for 1 hour without needing concentration. Today I wanted to go over some of the more common situations I find myself busting out shape water for utility (or sometimes even combat) reasons. There are three main ways to get the water you’ll be manipulating for the spell. The easiest is the environment,… [Continue Reading]

Planetside 2 Has a New Continent

Planetside 2 just recieved its first new map in eight years! Oshur has had a long and checked development history. Originally a collection of islands in the original Planetside, it was teased numerous times throughout the sequel’s history. A single developer, Wrel, developed the first iteration entirely in his spare time. Unfortunately, engine updates eventually made his version unusable. The newer version was built from the ground up, and boasts a unique island-based gameplay unlike the other maps we’ve seen. Platoons in Paradise And the new setting has been awesome from an infantry grunt’s perspective. The tropical aesthetic is a treat… [Continue Reading]

3 More Tips Every L4D2 Player Should Know

A while back I wrote an article about three basic tips every Left 4 Dead 2 player should know. Each of them are easy to understand yet massively increase anyone’s survivability. The tips in this followup article are less mandatory, but still good to know. Either they’re more situational, or there are nuances that make them a little tougher to explain effectively. Nevertheless, if you found the first one helpful, this sequel’s for you! Tip #1: Stand on map objects when you get the chance. Imagine a common situation: you’re traveling down the street, when a horde of zombies suddenly… [Continue Reading]

Just Cause 2: Agency Hovercraft DLC review

Despite loving Just Cause 2 and considering it among my top 3 favorite games, I don’t actually own most of the DLCs for it. Not counting the free ice-cream truck and turreted rickshaw, I only bought the Black Market Boom pack to get my hands on the amazing Air Propulsion Gun. All the stuff in the other DLCs don’t seem to serve any unique purpose, or add anything to the game that isn’t already done by base-game vehicles and weapons. But for no real reason, I recently decided to buy and review the Agency Hovercraft just to test how Avalanche… [Continue Reading]

No Longer Being Safe in Water

It’s no longer safe to be in water in Minecraft any more. Actually, nowhere in Minecraft in general is safe, because there are so many enemies that wander around, even during the day. But water was the one place I considered to always be safe and it really isn’t any more. I’m not saying that water used to be better. In fact, bodies of water used to be pretty crap. Back in Minecraft 1.8 (and a lot of previous versions as well), water was boring. There was literally nothing in it apart from, well, water. Oceans were vast, empty masses… [Continue Reading]
