The Closet Sniper Rifle

So, almost a year ago now, I talked about finally finding a way of playing Demoman that I enjoyed. I mentioned discovering a Soldier play style too as a footnote, but I wanted to give him a spotlight of his own! Figured he’d earned it after the amount rocket jumping around I’ve been doing as him recently. But more accurately, I want to talk about the Direct Hit. I used to see Soldier as a slow, boring and clumsy type of character which I just couldn’t find the appeal of. But the Direct Hit (and a lovely shiny pair of… [Continue Reading]

Surgeon’s Sidearms

What always irritates me when I see Medic cosmetics is that they rarely portray Medic’s medical practice properly. Most cosmetics portray Medic as a doctor. A proper medical doctor. With cosmetics like this one, this one, this one, and this one. and the fact that he’s running around with a Medi Gun in a shiny white labcoat, anyone not familiar with the lore and doesn’t pay attention to the voicelines would’ve thought Medic to be a Hippocrates-loving, pacifistic, and compassionate guardian angel. Meanwhile, the real Medic is an absolute psychopath with his skills being a side effect of his morbid curiosity. Did you… [Continue Reading]

Why doesn’t Engineer get a revolver?

Considering the number of cowboy-themed cosmetics and the Bucking Bronco taunt, I suppose I can safely say that the Engineer is pretty well associated with cowboys. However, while the Demoman gets a ton of knight-themed cosmetics and a few swords, Engineer never got the revolver that a lot of people wanted him to have. So why is that? Well, I don’t work at Valve, so I can’t really give a definite answer. but I can give a guess as to why that’s the case. First question one might ask: why not just give the Engineer one of Spy’s revolvers? Looking at… [Continue Reading]

Minigun Jumping

We all know the Heavy: slow, lumbering big Russian guy with a big gun. His slowness and general lack of mobility is pretty much why most of the community think that Heavy has a low skill ceiling. While Heavy does actually require a lot of gamesense, there’s no way around it: the Heavy has a very low mechanical skill ceiling since he’s limited by his low mobility. Many have sought to increase that skill ceiling by giving him more mobility. Foxzet tried replacing the Minigun with the Grappling Hook and had some pretty good results. But at the end of the day,… [Continue Reading]

The Eyelander has a lot of reskins…

Out of all the unlockable weapons, the Eyelander has the most number of reskins at 4. The closest competitor it has is the Axtinguisher at 3 (Postal Pummeler and the Australium and Festive reskins). What is so special about the Eyelander? First up, let’s look at all the reskins. The Nessie’s Nine Iron is a golf club with strong ties to the Demoman’s Scottish ancestry. The Australium Eyelander is one of 9 unlocks that got an Australium version. And speaking of which, Demoman is the only class to get 3 Australium weapons to himself and one of the three classes that can equip… [Continue Reading]

The Crone’s Dome VS the Point and Shoot!

The magic users of TF2 have long been plagued by this dilemma. Which wizard hat is the ultimate in spell-caster fashion, the charmed headwear to bewitch the eyes of others? Well, let’s look at two of them and then declare a winner with as much authority as a kindergarten kid has on international politics. First up, the Crone’s Dome. A community-created hat added during the Spectral Halloween Special, it’s a black witch hat with patches and a large, wide and floppy brim, plus a glowing face in front. If you’re not a fan of black you can paint the hat into… [Continue Reading]

Dissecting a Sentry Gun

Before we start, I’ll like to say a few things. Firstly, I’m assuming this is TF2 at 2007: No hats, no unlocks. Reason why is that it makes my job easier, and I’ll explain why later in the article. Secondly, I am making a guess on a video game mechanic. Grab your mountain of salt from a Scout getting walled off by a Sentry Gun and read this post with it. The Sentry Gun. Love it, hate it, we all know what it does. It tracks down enemy team members and shoots them. However, does anyone ever thought of how… [Continue Reading]

Trophy Belt

I’ve talked about a lot of cosmetics so far for every class. Hell, I even talked about an all-class cosmetic. Well, almost every class. I’ve not talked about a single Sniper cosmetic yet. Mainly because I hate him. But then, I suppose I can’t avoid talking about Sniper hats forever. If I do I’m going to eventually run out of hats to talk about 10 years later. So I decided to start things off with one of the rare things about the Sniper that I like: The Trophy Belt. The Trophy Belt is one of the first hats in TF2, released during… [Continue Reading]

The Problems with Pyro, and a Few Potential Fixes

In honor of the incoming Pyro rework, I’d like to discuss the shortcomings of the class, and the shortcomings of Valve’s previous attempts to “fix” him. Oh, Pyro. You’ve been a mediocre class from launch, and nobody at Valve ever really took the time to fix you. From the lowest levels of “I just installed yesterday” pubs, all the way up to invite play, few would debate the statement that “Pyro is a broken, poorly balanced class”. Fewer still could (or would care to) describe exactly why Pyro is broken to begin with. SECTION 1: WHY PYRO BREAKS PUBS At… [Continue Reading]

Rambling about the Scorch Shot

So, last night, Medic passed me the prizes on Steam (Thanks Medic!). Then with a swish of her lab coat she disappeared into the night, leaving me alone with a game and a TF2 key. I decided to use that key to unbox a crate, a #77 to be exact. And I told myself I’ll write an article about the item I unbox. Is it a hat? Or an Unusual hat? Or is it… Now, excuse me as I prepare to jump off a building. On the bright side, the Scorch Shot is one of my most favourite weapons in… [Continue Reading]
