Team Fortress Classic Soldier and HWGuy

The ultimate migratory classes for TF2 vets who are first trying the game. I don’t know what much to say about them, they play almost identically to their TF2 counterparts, and if you don’t change your playstyle in the slightest you won’t really go wrong. Here are some generic tips though: 1. Rebind your slot 5 weapon to slot 4. Just a suggestion, it really helped me. In TFC, there are actually 5 weapon slots, but no class uses more than 4 of them. I’ve never really understood the logic by which Valve chose each weapon to link to which… [Continue Reading]

Spy Melees and You!

This message will self destruct in 3… 2… 1…  Nah, just kidding. Instead, I’m here to discuss the various shivs you can drive between the shoulder blades of your hapless foes as TF2’s conniving, dashingly handsome rogue, The Spy. Sorry to step on the toes of Chevap666, but I haven’t seen one of these in a while, and figured “hey, there isn’t one for The Spy yet!”   The Butterfly Knife (And it’s Reskins: The Saxxy, The Black Rose, and the Sharp Dresser): The most magnanimous and recognizable of the Spy’s melees is also his default, and is a wonderfully serviceable weapon.… [Continue Reading]

Some Tips for Underwater Combat

I love underwater combat, and a recent run of pl_underwater_rainy has given me a lot of practice with it. Here are some things I’ve learned about fighting in Davy Jones’ locker. (Also, apologies for the fuzzy pictures; it turns out TF2 Replay doesn’t like photos taken underwater.) 1) Understand which of your weapons don’t work underwater. This is pretty basic, but you don’t want to waste valuable time trying to fire your Huntsman or stun with your Sandman only to find out they don’t work. Rule of thumb, things that involve taunts don’t work, so no stun, no Holiday Punching,… [Continue Reading]

Advice for Playing TFC Scout

TFC Scout has a lot in common with his Boston counterpart, but he emphasizes completely different parts of the Scout class role. Notably, he is even faster than TF2 Scout, but packs hardly a punch in combat. No meatshots, or moonshots, or really any sort of meaningful shots from this merc. Here’s what you gotta know: 1) You are a flagrunner true and true. Unlike Medic, who can flagrun, heal, infect, and kill all in the same life, you are a fragile speedster who better run away from everything. Your loadout is completely built around getting the heck out of… [Continue Reading]

Helpful things you probably already know about SPUF

You’d think that, being someone with over 10000 posts on SPUF, people like me and aabicus would know all the ins and outs of a forum like SPUF. Except we don’t. For ages, we didn’t know how you find out who gave you rep and stuff like that. So here are some lovely little tips for you so you don’t get as confused as us. Editing the title of your thread What’s that? Made a typo in the title of your thread? Tried editing it in the Edit Post section but it didn’t work? There’s a solution! Yes, seriously. Turns… [Continue Reading]

How to deal with stupid Medics

You’ve had the same nightmare Medics, haven’t you? You’ve seen them. You must have seen them. Everyone’s seen them, whether they’ve been fighting people of the opposite colour, fighting hordes of robots or fighting a single, over-powered boss with thousands of hit points. You know what they’re like. All they do is heal one person, generally a Heavy. They refuse to spread heals around and take forever to deploy a single Uber, which they drop most of the time. If they’re not healing their Heavy friend, they turn into a Battle Medic and try to syringe things before rejoining their… [Continue Reading]

Playing Dell’s father (possibly)

Is the Team Fortress Classic engineer Dell’s father? Personally, I’m unsure. It would be cool to think that missing link between Radigan and Dell Conagher was also a Mann-employed combat engineer, but on the other hand that means Dell is about to fight his father in the coming comics. But even if he’s not related biologically to Dell Conagher, the TFC Engineer is definitely related in gameplay. They are very, very similar. The first thing aspiring TF2 migrants are going to have to terms with is the upgrading process. Here it is: You need to put all 200 metal into… [Continue Reading]

Playing the Sniper Rifle in Team Fortress Classic

Aabicus, don’t you mean “Playing the Sniper”? No, I mean playing the sniper rifle. Because that is your job. Your life. That gun is a battlefield-stomping menace that boasts more flexibility and versatility than anything in Team Fortress 2. I know you think you’ve fought sniper rifles in TF2, but you haven’t fought a gun that can: *Charge and headshot from the hip *Charge-up damage infinitely *deal slowdown on bodyshot that never goes away (unless healed by a medic) *Deal knockback to friendlies, leading to the comical-looking but super useful “Sniper Jumping” technique *Gib on fully-charged headshot But believe it… [Continue Reading]

A Tale of Two Communities

Lately, SPUF has gotten a bit cabin-feverish, and I can’t say I blame them. The anger seems to be directed at Valve’s repeated promises of “great stuff on the horizon!” and the actuality of the extreme drought of new content for TF2. Recently, even the throwaway crap such as blog posts, cosmetics, and localization-file-only updates have dried up. I can understand why SPUF is upset. But I disagree with how a large amount of this anger seems to be directed at Dota 2, Valve’s newest cash cow and spearhead of the MOBA genre that is clearly getting the lion’s share… [Continue Reading]

Advice for Playing Greg

In honor of the newest comic revealing the name of the TFC Demoman, I thought I’d take this opportunity to write a guide on how to play him if you ever feel the need to give TFC a try and just embrace the grenades. Greg has so many explosive toys to play with I doubt you’ll even get a chance to try them all out in your first life before your uterus is wrapped around a tree at least ten yards away from your death’s epicenter. Just like in TF2, I main Medic and offclass Demoman,  so I’m significantly less… [Continue Reading]
