An Engineer’s Guide to Engineering

As an Engineer main who has several seasons of competitive under his belt, I am often approached by numerous newcomer Engineer players with various questions such as “What loadout should I use?” or “Where should I build in the map X?”. I would love to say I know all the answers after all my time of playing, but the reality of it is–Engineering is dynamic. It can differ from Engineer to Engineer as well as their playstyle strengths and weaknesses. It can also differ from team support and team dynamics. When it comes down to it, between variables of the… [Continue Reading]

Extending Southern Hospitality for Crate Justice

It’s a curious fact that the Strange Southern Hospitality, alone of all the Engineer’s wrenches, ranks up on its owner’s melee kill count rather than sentry kill count. The March 5, 2014 update added sentry kill tracking to it, ruling the former melee-only counter a mistake, but if fans of Southern Hospitality think they’re going to be spattering their spiky wrenches with gore anytime soon, they’ve got another think coming — the newly added sentry kill counter is secondary and doesn’t affect Strange rank. Players all over have been protesting this, of course. They cite the difficulty not only of… [Continue Reading]

Real Teammates of Genius

Red Shed Brewers presents Real Teammates of Genius. Today, we salute you, Mister Determined Last Point Engineer. Only a man of your caliber would even attempt as daring a feat as building on your own last control point as soon as the game started. The other Engineers on your team lack the foresight to prepare for the worst. But fret not, RED Team, for you have Determined Last Point Engineer, and no one is taking his point, except the Spy that just sapped all of his buildings. Even in the face of your entire team asking you to move that gear up,… [Continue Reading]

Of Pistols, and the Engineer, I Sing

The Wrangler has long been plagued by regular accusations of being overpowered. The Short Circuit was massively buffed during the Smissmas 2013 update, to immediate or nigh-immediate bans from all Highlander leagues; subsequent nerfs have failed to placate them (or angry Soldiers and Demos). So where does that leave the Engineer’s third secondary option — the humble Pistol? Many insist that in the face of such strong unlocks, there is no reason for Engineers to use the Pistol — to use considerably less colorful language than a typical comment along those lines. In fact, the Daily SPUF’s own aabicus ran… [Continue Reading]

Countering the Gunslinger

SPUF has pretty much agreed: we hate the gunslinger. I am not going into a rant about whether it is overpowered or not – check any page of SPUF for that. Regardless of whether or not it is OP, it is still no fun to play against. But it can be countered by most classes without too much effort. Of course, you can always call a friend over to help you take it out, but sometimes you just have to do it yourself. The mini-sentry has 100 health and 48 DPS, which is formidable considering it is such a small… [Continue Reading]

Bush Sentries: When Man & Machine team up with Nature to ruin your day

Being one of the elders of tf2 at nearly the age of thirty, I’ve been around since the release of the Orange Box, before the game was stuffed to the gills with trickle content and inevitably released for free to the public as a means to extend it’s life, Before the Beggar’s Bazooka and it’s inevitable sky flying nerf; Before the Axtinguisher’s reign on close quarter encounters and it’s inevitable demoknight contenders and even before before The Mini Sentry and it’s widespread loathing and unavoidable slandering towards one’s sexual preference for choosing to use it liberally on King of the… [Continue Reading]

Some Tips for Controlling Your Remote Control Sentry

So you went ahead and downloaded this mod! But somehow you aren’t good at playing a heavy with a rocket launcher taped to his head? Never fear, this article will give you all the advice you need! Tip 1: Strafe – You don’t have to shoot the gun. It shoots for you. Instead, focus all your energy on moving around. Dodge projectiles. This is seriously the main perk you have over regular sentries. Tip 2: Get a fellow engineer to help out. A man on the front lines repairing is a godsend for a moving sentry. Repair damage, replenish ammo,… [Continue Reading]

How to Reach the Max’s Severed Head in trade_portal2_beta5

Check out that glorious display of health and ammo next to that high-tier cosmetic on the table. Want to show all your teammates this secret treat? Whenever I play trade_portal2_beta5 (an increasingly common map on the trade servers I frequent) this is often my goal as I pass the time; to get a teleporter over there. Here’s how.

Out-Playing or Out-Thinking Unlocks

Gosh darnit Engineer, why must you STILL be around for me to type an article on? Everyone’s starting to question my relationship with you! D’oh! Fine then. Where was I? Oh yes, the blog. Well as you all have discovered this Australian Christmas, a bunch of weapons have been changed, the Soda Popper now turns Scout into Rocket J Squirrel during the initiation of his Hype Mode via Alt-fire, Soldier gains maximum health and active health regeneration with the Battilion’s Backup and the Concherer respectively…

In Defense of the Gunslinger

The Gunslinger gets a lot of hate. In fact, if we were to gather all the hate for the Gunslinger, we could probably power a mission to the moon. Actually, that was probably a bad example, as modern calculators have more power than those rockets that went to the moon had, but still, there is so much hate, it can make your head spin. Hours have been spend on SPUF going backwards and forwards, with nothing to show for it apart from a single bug fix. Now, before we start, let’s make this clear: I am not a fan of… [Continue Reading]
