Engineer: subtlety at its finest

Hello, My name is Wwlink55, or Clockwork Rainbowdash on Steam, and this is my first article for the Daily SPUF. I’m someone who absolutely loves the engineer. The sweet feeling of a scout being mulched down with bullets, the clang of a wrench on the skull of an enemy spy, or the beeping of a sentry, looming through the hallways. It’s a bit of an art form to me, and having everything in the best possible spot is such an awesome feeling. The key to this, is subtlety. Before you just throw your buildings down, think of all the possibilities… [Continue Reading]

Balance vs. Novelity: What do we do with the Pomson?

The Pomson is a subject of innumerable controversies, some want it nerfed to the ground, some want it as it is, some want it to be dat Bison reskin, and et cetera. But which one must we run with, and how can we understand which perspective one will prefer? The Issue The Pomson, when first released, was a spammy weapon of mass destruction (not that far to my opinion, but still). One issue was that it was very deleterious to Medics and Spies, removing well-earned (or not so well-earned) Übercharge and Cloak. It was a mundane concept at first, not… [Continue Reading]

Super Important TF2 Decisions

If Brink and Loadout taught us anything, it’s that players love to get to make their own decisions. Customize their inventories and weapons just the way they like it, be the masters of their own destiny, etc. To this end, TF2 probably gives their players more decisions than both of the previous games combined. But in some cases, these decisions can result in choices that are less than relevant. In fact, you could say these decisions make no difference whatsoever. 1. Rotating your teleporter entrance. The teleporter exit determines what direction your teammate is facing when they come out (and… [Continue Reading]

“L’ingénieur est un espion!”

Don’t turn invisible and think you’re invincible: they’re completely different words. Don’t go running after the person you’re disguised as. Don’t try to backstab somebody in the front or while surrounded by a dozen other enemies. Don’t kill an Engineer if he has an operational Sentry nearby. Don’t think you can replace a Heavy and destroy the other team with L’étranger. Basic advice for budding Spies, wouldn’t you think? But like that Sniper who tries to shoot through glass, there doesn’t seem any end to the ignorance of newbie Spies. Now if you’re new to TF2 and you like the… [Continue Reading]

Engie’s secret best friend

Howdy! Today we’re gonna do things “Texas style,” or at least what new players such as myself like to do, which is find as many interesting new weapons as possible and leave our stock loadouts behind. Yeee-haw! Oh… dead again. But I was so sure my Crusader’s Crossbow would do the trick. Now we start again. Since I know Medic quite well, I hear a lot about how it’s bad to just equip new items as soon as you get them. Assuming a new weapon is better than the stock equivalent usually ends in a horrible death and/or ragequit. This… [Continue Reading]

ACTUAL Training Weapons

Put that Rocket Jumper down. This article is designed to cover weapons that actually do the job of training somebody who hopes to get better with a class in TF2. These weapons encourage (or force) the player to learn things that translate well into regular loadouts, and don’t force the player to become reliant on them to do well. So put your Front Runners on, it’s training time! 1. Candy Cane. The Candy Cane is a depressingly low-poly melee weapon that grants Scout health kits on kill, at the cost of 25% explosive damage vulnerability. It’s this second half that… [Continue Reading]

How to Jump Safely in a Wrangled Universe: Adaptability, Self-Preservation, and You

As fun as it can be, the viability of sentry jumping — undoubtedly one of the flashiest tools in the Engineer’s arsenal — is severely limited in comparison to the other two forms of self-initiated explosive mobility, rocket- and sticky-jumping. The setup and positioning demands, not to mention the unforgiving health cost — all the more dangerous for a light class — can leave players scratching their heads and asking, quite reasonably, what possible use sentry jumping could have outside of gimmick plays in artificial or highly unlikely situations. No matter how you spin it, sentry jumping will always require… [Continue Reading]

Stock engineer is better on offense than defense

(Note: This article was co-written with SilverAlen, and it was originally his observation. Thanks Alen!) The key here is “stock” Engineer, but after some time playing him I’ve noticed that he’s honestly more important to his team on offense than defense. At least on pubs. Why? Hear me out! If engineer is on a dedicated offensive team, enemies are less likely to push and less likely to destroy his nest. Even when they do, they usually do not prioritize him. Defensive teams tend to use the Kritzkrieg or Quick-Fix, so you are less likely to get ubers. Spies will typically… [Continue Reading]

TF2 vs. TFC: Who would win?

A long time ago I made a thread just for funsies, Who would win in a fight; the TF2 team or the TFC (Team Fortress Classic) team? After fifteen pages and several necros, the consensus appears to be: probably TFC, but both teams have a lot of pros and cons on their side of the table. So, without further ado, I’m going to look at each of the nine classes from TFC and TF2 and compare which outclasses his counterpart. There are obviously a myriad of other factors like grenades, random crits, unlocks, and bunnyhopping that would have to be… [Continue Reading]

Playing Dell’s father (possibly)

Is the Team Fortress Classic engineer Dell’s father? Personally, I’m unsure. It would be cool to think that missing link between Radigan and Dell Conagher was also a Mann-employed combat engineer, but on the other hand that means Dell is about to fight his father in the coming comics. But even if he’s not related biologically to Dell Conagher, the TFC Engineer is definitely related in gameplay. They are very, very similar. The first thing aspiring TF2 migrants are going to have to terms with is the upgrading process. Here it is: You need to put all 200 metal into… [Continue Reading]
