On Sound Cues

Playing Left 4 Dead 2 recently made me realize something. The sounds and music in that game and its predecessor Left 4 Dead 1 are absolutely amazing. Really, the more I think about it, the more I feel the sound direction is what ties the game together and gives both the game and the player direction without being in your face. You see, in Left 4 Dead, there’s not a huge amount of actual music. All the music comes from the many sound cues from your environments as you walk by. You know when there’s a tank coming, not just… [Continue Reading]

Five Songs To Calm One Down

There’s always noise in my head. Always someone talking. Always a conversation. Always a mess of things. There’s almost always some music there as well. The noise doesn’t stop until I go to sleep. But sometimes the noise is so loud that I can’t sleep. So I need some nice, calm, real world music to listen to. So here are five songs which calm me down, and I hope do the same for you. 5. Secunda, TESV Skyrim Soundtrack This song is a fairly obvious one, a track I mentioned in my list of video game songs that I enjoy.… [Continue Reading]

Medic’s Favourite Video Game Songs

I have weird tastes in music. Although I generally dislike things like pop and jazz, I’ll happily listen to a lot of different types of rock and metal music. I am a fan of Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Crowded House, Linkin Park and Disturbed all at the same time. I actually saw Radiohead live when I was 11, and I reviewed their last album here. When it comes to video game music, it’s not as bad, a lot of the things I like have common themes about them. Unfortunately, I have zero musical talent nor do I have… [Continue Reading]

On Enjoying Various Kinds of Music

It’s hard to describe music that I like. On one hand, I’m the old sort of sap who will happily listen to Crowded House for hours and hours on end. On the other hand, I’ll also happily listen to Disturbed for hours and hours on end. I also enjoy somewhat mainstream music like Queens of the Stone Age and Radiohead, both of whom have featured in reviews here on the Daily SPUF. Heck, I also saw Radiohead live, on the day that “2 + 2 = 5” was recorded live for the Com Lag EP.Seriously. If you have Com Lag… [Continue Reading]

The New QOTSA Album – Villains

When it comes to reviewing things, I’m always late to the punch. But with a lot of things, you need some time to listen and let things settle down a bit. Maybe you just need to absorb what you just watched. Maybe you need to watch, read or listen again. That’s definitely the case with the new Queens of the Stone Age album, Villains. The first song I heard was their two singles, The Way You Used To Do and The Evil Has Landed. I didn’t really listen to them too much in detail because I wanted to hear the… [Continue Reading]

Octavia’s Anthem – The Trouble with Cephalons

On Friday 24th, Update 20 came out for Warframe. Dubbed Octavia’s Anthem, it boasted “30 pages” of updates, fixes and changes. They were not wrong. The update was just over 1GB to download, amd featured the new Warframe Octavia, as well as the quest to obtain her. Octavia’s Anthem is an… interesting quest to say the least. NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD. I can’t really write a non-spoiler-y review of this quest as it is SUPER lore-heavy. As always, you have to talk to someone. If you have access to the quest (which requires the War Within to be completed), you can… [Continue Reading]

Reviewing the new Radiohead album – A Moon Shaped Pool

Did you know that I’m a Radiohead fan? Probably not. You probably also don’t know that I saw Radiohead live at Earls Court when I was 11 years old. Even more interesting is the fact that I’m technically on the Japanese-release album Com Lag. Track one is 2+2=5, recorded at Earls Court, the exact date I went to see them. But being a Radiohead fan is weird, because Radiohead themselves don’t really seem to give a fuck. They’re the sort of band that does whatever the hell it wants. Especially Thom Yorke. Albums are released pretty much at random, and… [Continue Reading]

Rocket Jump Waltzing Away – TF2’s Soundtrack

I love the soundtrack of Team Fortress 2. Absolutely adore it. My favourite tracks are by far Rocket Jump Waltz (which has been my alarm tone on my phone for about 2 years now) and It Hates Me So Much, from Expiration Date… I was about to say the recent 15 minute video, then I remembered just how long ago that update was. Wow. Music is a big part of every video game and if it wasn’t for the loud, extravagant orchestra-like soundtrack, TF2’s promotional content wouldn’t have nearly as much Ooomph. Every time you open up the game, there’s… [Continue Reading]

SPUF sings It’s Beginning to Look Alot Like Dustbowl

Download the song here. It had been a while since the last community project or contest, SPUF needed something to break up the usual chain of threads, and the holidays were coming up soon. So I thought, why not have SPUFers sing a well known TF2 version of a Christmas song together for fun? And thus, I created the thread for SPUF sings. It was something I’d brought up in an itsurblog thread or two prior, but I only just created it this last November. Of course, the idea wasn’t original at all, the concept was shamelessly ripped from a… [Continue Reading]
