There Once Was a Caber from Ullapool

Whose explosion was quite unbelievable With a loud angry bang It’d throw off Sniper’s aim By removing his head from his clavicles Now that Valve has, in their infinite wisdom, removed the ability of the stock bottle to shatter on a critical hit, the Ullapool Caber remains the only TF2 melee that is actually a bottomless supply of identical melee weapons as opposed to a unique item. It’s also a point of contention among the sub genre of TF2 players who enjoy going on SPUf and criticizing the game’s balance. For some reason they aren’t too hot on a melee weapon that deals… [Continue Reading]

I don’t actually like the Demoman.

The Demoman is by far the most dangerous class around. Unless you’re doing something really, really stupid, if you have a brain and basic game sense, you’ll do well. A bit like the Heavy. But unlike the Heavy, you’re not restricted to only using a minigun (because, no matter how much you try, Fat Scout is not an effective subclass) and you move at faster than a snail. If you know how to sticky jump, the world is your death-filled oyster. You basically rule. Alright, not exactly, in the pro scene, a Demoman needs protecting just like a Medic, but… [Continue Reading]

The Plight of These Pestilential Pumpkin Presents

Halloween is back! As Valve recently announced, all five of the previous Halloween events are playable! (I’m not sure why that’s news, they always make the old Halloweens playable, but it’s still appreciated.) However, as much as I want to get into the Halloween spirit, the one thought plaguing my mind is, “Are those darn presents going to screw me over again?” Most of the old Halloween maps come with presents that grant the player who picks it up some sort of event-restricted cosmetic reward. And that’s about all that’s remained consistent over the years, except for the number of… [Continue Reading]

What if Valve teamed up with Lego?

In AD 2010, the epic story-driven Lego theme known as Bionicle met its rushed end. Fans of Lego everywhere were devastated. Not only was the demise of Bionicle sudden, it also ended with the most disappointing wave of toys they’d produced. Those were some dark days. It was thought that Lego’s greatest project, which had lasted for ten glorious years, would be lost forever. Earlier this year, whispers began to surface, rumors of a return for the theme. Before the Lego Movie, Bionicle was as mainstream as Lego ever got. It maintained a huge fanbase even after it was cancelled.… [Continue Reading]

Fancy Halloween Cosmetics

Halloween updates are generally fairly predictable. New map, random gifts, possibly a crate, fun new gimmick and some creepy costumes. You’re almost guaranteed that Pyro will get a cool monster-like outfit, or he’ll become a ghost or something like that.  Either way, Pyro almost always gets the best Halloween costumes. Sniper generally has to make do with a Vampire Hunter look and Medic gets the “crazy evil Dr Frankenstein” as always. It’s either that or being an Egyptian Pharaoh. Engineer generally gets fuck all in the Halloween department, apart from being a really annoying fly boy that only works if you have… [Continue Reading]

The Big 500 – Fun, games and prizes!

Hello everyone and welcome to the 500th post on the Daily SPUF! That’s right, we’ve reached 500 articles and almost all of them are full of cool TF2 stuff and you should go and read every single article! Okay, fine, don’t do that (although it can take up a lot of your time), but instead of reading every single article, why not enter this contest! Yep, we’re hosting a 500th Article Special contest here. No, this isn’t an excuse to make you all do all the work, because I’ll also be writing a bunch of articles too, based on what… [Continue Reading]

TF2 receives first new Normal Quality item since 2007

I can’t be the only one who thinks there’s something elegantly ground-breaking in that simple, simple change during today’s double-update. To quote directly from the update notes: “Made the Spellbook Magazine a base action slot item for players to equip and use when playing on a server that uses Halloween Spells” For gameplay, this means that if you join a server that has spells enabled (which can be any server thanks to a new cvar, but also plr_hightower_event by default) and your action slot is empty, it’s autofilled with this: A very minor change, at the moment almost inconsequential. Valve clearly… [Continue Reading]

A couple of reasons to play TF2 around about now

I know the feeling. You kinda want to maybe play Team Fortress 2 but you just can’t bring yourself to click on the play button. Or maybe you’ve just grown bored of the game. The last two years alone have doubled the number of hats you can wear. And… [Continue Reading]

The joys of playing with new players

When you look at SPUF, you see a lot of spitting and huffing and puffing and complaining about how new guys are ruining the game. There’s sometimes venom dripping down the walls. Almost literally, if you listen to some of the much angrier members of SPUF. But the really weird thing is how all that hatred and anger disappears almost completely when a legitimately new person comes along. No matter how much we say we hate newbies and how they’re ruining the game, part of us loves them dearly. The reasons for this sudden change in attitude vary from person… [Continue Reading]

The Perils of Posing in Garry’s Mod

Let’s just clarify right from the start that I am too stubborn and too dumb to use Source Film Maker. It runs poorly on my laptop and I just can’t get my head around it. Plus, I’m very much invested in Garry’s Mod now. The only reason I play TF2 is because I wanted Garry’s Mod and the cartoony shooter looked better than the serious shooter. Since that fateful day, I have been posing things in Garry’s Mod. All my pictures on this blog are from Garry’s Mod or are taken in-game in Team Fortress 2. Dekky does his images… [Continue Reading]
