Altering the Invisible Man.

The Spy, a class of deceit, subterfuge, and sabotage. He holds in his arsenal: a knife capable of killing anything in one hit, a gun in case he’s caught in a bad situation, an electro-sapper to destroy enemy fortifications, a disguise kit to seamlessly blend in with the enemy, and finally a collection of watches capable of rendering him completely invisible. Those watches are pivotal to everything the spy can do. His disguise kit is useless without being in the right position; a position only reachable by an invisible man. His knife only has strength from behind. How can he… [Continue Reading]

A talk about the Scout Melee

So a lot of talk on the forums over the past few months has pointed out that the stock melee is underpowered, reskins included.  But why is it?  Because there are better unlocks out there?  From what I can tell, a general consensus agrees that stock melee weapons across all weapons are underpowered compared to other unlocks, such as the Axtinguisher and Bushwaka.  Better yet, those same people also claim that the rest of the melees should be balanced around said unlocks, rather than stock.  Now, although I do not agree with them on that case, I’m not saying they… [Continue Reading]

A Silver Lining to the Stickybomb Launcher Nerf

As a fellow Team Fortress enthusiast, I’m sure I don’t need to remind you–the reader–about the controversial nerf to the Stickybomb Launcher from the recent Love & War update, nor the equally controversial reversion of said nerf. It became the subject of much debate and, unfortunately, heated and rather aggressive argument. Unless you had no opinion on the matter, this was a change that affected you. I’ll be frank with you: I didn’t support the nerf, and I was strongly in favor of the reversion. That’s not to say that I was adamantly against it; there were counterpoints from respected… [Continue Reading]

Loved For What You Are: It’s Okay To Be Situational

It seems to me that many people are of the opinion  that certain pieces of weaponry in Team Fortress 2 are underpowered or useless by the nature of not being optimal at all times.  If something is generally going to serve you better than all the other options available, why would you ever bother to use the alternatives?  Is it really worth it to attempt to engineer a situation where your situational alternative will potentially outperform the typical best choice? I would argue that yes, it is, and my reasoning is as follows: First of all, there are many times where… [Continue Reading]

Dekky’s introduction to Astrophysics

If you’ve listened to Episode 2 of The PhlogistiCast, you may have noticed the distinct lack of a warning label reading ‘May contain incorrect physics and positive statements about Scout.’ Since we recorded it live, mistakes were bound to happen. A couple of things slipped through the Net of Correction and, being the studious straight-A nerd I am, I couldn’t sleep until I laid them to rest. By the way, if you haven’t listened to that episode, here is a link so you no longer have to wear a bag of shame. With the recent beta release of rd_asteroid, the… [Continue Reading]

What’s that? A new blog post?

Normally, most blog posts asking people to do things with or for Valve generally require a little know-how. Some elbow grease. A bit of effort. That sort of thing. Then again, generally, Valve like to ask us to make cosmetic items which they can sell and you get some profit from if you’re one of the select few who manage to get chosen and all that. Let’s just say, the chances are slim. But after today’s blog post, we’ve got something different. Merchandise. T-Shirts. Posters. Stuff like that. From the blog post, it seems that it’s just t-shirts and posters… [Continue Reading]

Howdy partner! Part one is that way! Otherwise, continue on the road to Madness.    #5. Sasha vs K9000 cyberdog gun What does a person look for in a weapon? Firepower? Good looks? Being fear inducing? Being financially viable? How about companionship? Yes, the wiseman knows that during the periods of time he isn’t killing foes, it can get lonely. Medic isn’t nearby, your companion is stuck in that doorway again, so who will listen to your terrible poetry? Well at least you have your gun… Now just take Occam’s razor to this situation and POW! A new friend who will… [Continue Reading]

TF2 weapons vs Fallout weapons Part 1: Guns that make holes in people

Team Fortress 2 and the Fallout series are both well known for having a dizzying selection of firepower to command, and while the choice can be overwhelming, there is a gun to suit all manners of tastes. Yet the universal truth is no two weapons are created equal. To answer the ultimate question of which game has the better quality of create-dead-people-emitters, I will examine 18 weapons from both the TF2 and Fallout universes. There will be 9 comparisons; 1 for each TF2 class. Some quick rules for fairness; All Fallout weapons will be assumed to be fully upgraded and… [Continue Reading]

The Solemn Spy

My very first article here was about the Solemn Vow, and now, over 100 articles later, I feel it’s time to revisit this glorious, semi-overpowered weapon. I’m feeling so sentimental about it that I’m even using the original photo from that article. In the original article, I spent most of my time going over the game play elements of it, how it allowed the user to make more informed decisions about whether to run away or not. Today, I want to talk about some different aspects of this weapon. The Solemn Vow to me has sentimental value. I managed to… [Continue Reading]
