An Engineer’s Guide to Engineering

As an Engineer main who has several seasons of competitive under his belt, I am often approached by numerous newcomer Engineer players with various questions such as “What loadout should I use?” or “Where should I build in the map X?”. I would love to say I know all the answers after all my time of playing, but the reality of it is–Engineering is dynamic. It can differ from Engineer to Engineer as well as their playstyle strengths and weaknesses. It can also differ from team support and team dynamics. When it comes down to it, between variables of the… [Continue Reading]

How to Come Up With Ideas For New Daily SPUF Articles

The Daily SPUF loves publishing articles written by members of the community! TF2 is such a multi-faceted game that no one individual can master or even care about all of it, so having a fresh new perspective on our beloved game is important for the blog’s coverage. But a lot of people write to me saying that while they’d love to and want to write an article, they can’t think of what to write about! Writer’s block can hit all of us, and I’m no exception. But here are some common themes that routinely produce great articles to get those… [Continue Reading]

Offline Team Fortress

If you’re as unlucky as I am, not having internet connection for a while is a regular occurrence. Sometimes it lasts no more than a few minutes, other times, you’re detached from the interwebz for a good couple of days. While I generally have other things to do, such as studying, working, cleaning or making weapons out of cardboard, some of you might be desperate to get your TF2 fix. Here’s some hints and tips for you.

Phishing in Sawmill

So, lately, it seems that Team Fortress 2’s trading system has been full of ups and downs. But while no one can predict when the item servers are going to die or when the trading system will go down for the umpteenth time, there IS something you can protect yourself from. Today, we’ll discuss the recent phishing spree. What’s phishing then? Well, according to Wikipedia, it is: Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. In Team Fortress 2, it’s… [Continue Reading]

How to Live the Trackpad Life

Mention to anyone that you’re using a trackpad — also called a touchpad — to play TF2, and you’ll be greeted with gasps of horror. How could anyone play an FPS without the finesse afforded by a real mouse? Why would you limit your own aim and movement like that? At least a controller would allow you to become the graceful and bloodcurdlingly bloodthirsty Demoballerina. Even drawing tablets have been advocated favorably over the specter of the default laptop trackpad. How and why are different questions, of course. No doubt the why differs from person to person, but there are… [Continue Reading]

Heavy melees and you!

Do you like boxing? Even if you don’t, you might’ve heard of Muhammad Ali. A damn good fighter who is responsible for the phrase “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. To fight like that is to be efficient – strike only when the enemy opens up and meanwhile dodge his attacks. Draw a parallel to TF2 and you will see how melee attacks should really be used – with a certain goal in mind, focused on avoiding the opponent’s swings and determined to win. Ali also kicked quite a lot of people, repeatedly, in their heads to prevent… [Continue Reading]

Countering the Gunslinger

SPUF has pretty much agreed: we hate the gunslinger. I am not going into a rant about whether it is overpowered or not – check any page of SPUF for that. Regardless of whether or not it is OP, it is still no fun to play against. But it can be countered by most classes without too much effort. Of course, you can always call a friend over to help you take it out, but sometimes you just have to do it yourself. The mini-sentry has 100 health and 48 DPS, which is formidable considering it is such a small… [Continue Reading]

Fixing A Hole

It’s no secret that some of the senior staff here at SPUF really like Special Delivery and the only map that supports it, Doomsday. However, one common thing that many people I talk to about Doomsday tell me is that the entire map is a horrendously mapped, broken pile of garbage. And they’re absolutely right. As aabicus put it when I spoke with him several nights ago, “It’s like Valve forgets about the Sticky Jumper when they make maps.” The opposite seems to be true as well, in that the folks at Valve forget about maps when they made the Sticky Jumper. Doomsday… [Continue Reading]
