SPUF is what one would call a forum or a bulletin board. Steam Community User Discussions (SCUD) is less of a bulletin board, more of a discussion board – it is a very trimmed down version of your standard forum software. Reddit is, well, um, something else. A strange, messy thing that has really taken off. Then you have a combination of the two, a bit like the League of Legends ‘boards’. Many forums just have basic features. You can make a thread. You can reply to threads. If you’re lucky there’s a personal message system. Some allow you to… [Continue Reading]

Stupidly Simple Fixes – Part 2

A note before I start: these are just ideas and thoughts, both my own and combined with other people’s thoughts, particularly SPUFers. Do me a favour and don’t take them as absolutes or anything. Should have put this at the top of the previous article, really. And probably should have published this before the Gun Mettle update, but oh well. Bad timing and all that. Still, I like my ideas better. Anyway, considering that Valve hasn’t really been doing much lately when it comes to balance changes, I’ve decided to take things into my own hands and try and fix… [Continue Reading]

The Crusader’s Crossbow is overpowered

Not so serious title there. It’s one of those attention-grabbing things that would automatically get you a huge pile of downvotes on any site that uses an upvote / downvote system. But there is some truth to that attention-grabbing title. There is something wrong with the Crusader’s Crossbow. Firstly, a historical thing. Crusaders were bastards. All they did was incite holy war against people with different beliefs. Bastards, the lot of them. Anyway, back to our version of this medieval beauty. The Crusader’s Crossbow is the only non-Syringe Gun Medic primary. The only one. Probably forever, since Medic primaries are… [Continue Reading]

Why I play League of Legends

When I say I play League of Legends, most people I know roll their eyes and sigh. Despite League of Legends having a literal fuckton of players, it seems that 90% of people I know really dislike the game. They look at me as if I’m some sort of masochist maniac. Well they’re wrong. There’s other reasons why I like League of Legends. The first reason is that I like the art style. Sadly, the style has been changing over the years, going for a more detailed, darker, Dota look. But when I started playing, everything was bright colours and… [Continue Reading]

It’s not just about adding new content

Let’s face it, we’re still in a giant content drought. Literally nothing has happened to TF2 that’s even worth talking about. That’s why you’ve seen so much non-TF2 stuff here lately. It’s why people like Star_ are moving away and making videos about other things. While competitive TF2 is still there, it’s not really going anywhere special. Modding and SFM communities still exist, but there’s little else going on. Smaller TF2 communities are lagging behind, while larger ones like Reddit and SCUD are filled with nothing more than memes, chatter and balance for the lowest common denominator. It’s reached a… [Continue Reading]

Conflicting Communities: Of Heisters and Mercenaries

So as most of you have noticed (though probably not) there has been a distinct lack of posts made by me on SPUF. You can tell from the lack of shitposts made by a certain PootNameHere. Why is that? Well, the answer is simpler than you think. I have become bored of TF2. My attention span for this game literally died out. Sure, I could blame EOTL for driving me away, sure, I could blame Valve for flooding this game with a never ending amount of hats, but no. The reason is, once again, simpler than you think. It’s all… [Continue Reading]

Why I, as a Medic, really really hate Snipers

Really, this should be obvious. And I should start off with being 100% honest that I dislike dying – I just want to heal people and spread Medic-y goodness. So really, any class that kills me is going to get ranted at more than necessary. That is, unless they can protect me and net me lots of assists. Don’t look at me like that, I need to get my violent blood lust somehow, and whenever I draw my syringe gun, you all bitch at me. Plus, people need to put my healing to good use. But nothing irks me more… [Continue Reading]

Ways TF2 Could Have Been Designed Better

TF2 was the first online game I really played full-time hardcore srs-bzns style. Before TF2 entered my life, I’d occasionally get to try games on my friend’s N64s and I had vague memories of Oregon Trail and Humongous Entertainment games growing up, but I’d been largely sheltered from the gaming world due to my parents thinking that games rotted your brain. So once I left for college and experienced newfound freedom, The Orange Box seemed a logical first purchase, since I’d also played Portal when it came out for free in 2007 and (somehow) passed my parent’s “nonviolent and educational” criteria.… [Continue Reading]

TF2 is not dying, but its spirit is tired…

Team Fortress 2 isn’t dying. It has had its ups and downs, but there’s still people playing this game and it’s still up there on Steam’s top ten played games. The game still works for the most part. It’s not dying at all. There are issues though. The problem is deeper than simply a game taking its last breaths. The spirit of Team Fortress 2 is ill. What do I mean by spirit? I mean the population of TF2. Its blood and mind. The community. The middle of the road people. People like you and me. Team Fortress 2 owes… [Continue Reading]
