On Stealth

Stealth and Shooters have always been strange bedfellows ever since they first met. On one hand the genres don’t appear to mesh well, what with your standard FPS starring a one-man army who plows through hundreds of mooks with an ever-increasing assortment of deadly weapons, and stealth involving slow, laborious sneaking past individual guards and relying on not making sound or setting off alarms. On the other hand, that’s exactly why stealth games have a dedicated niche fanbase, exactly because it goes against the conventions of the genre and uses the core elements of an FPS in a creative new… [Continue Reading]

Feminism and Team Fortress 2

I can hear you all screaming. I can hear the thundering footsteps of tumblr-based feminists stampeding towards us. We’re all doomed. Or at least you are, since I technically don’t exist. Alright, I’m kidding, you’re safe here (although maybe not for long). But since someone suggested this topic, something that hasn’t really been covered before, I thought, why not? My stance on the whole thing is rather, well, unique… If you just look at Team Fortress 2 at face value, you’d probably deem it as ‘propaganda for the patriarchy’ or something like that. Nine men of various sizes, shapes and… [Continue Reading]

Why the control points in TF2 are amazing.

Lately, I’ve been playing games other than Team Fortress 2, hence my recent name changes on Steam. You can probably guess what I’ve been playing a lot of from my current name, and said being will appear in an article later on. But once again, I’m dwardling when I should be actually talking about stuff. After playing other games, I have come to the opinion that Team Fortress 2 has the best control points ever. A lot of games have control points, although they’re generally just called objectives or something boring. The whole point of one is to keep a… [Continue Reading]

Beggin’

The Beggar’s Bazooka baffles me to this very day. Why? I’ll get to that. But the other night, I did something strange and loaded up TF2 and started actually playing. Yeah, seriously. After a while, I ended up in a glitched Mann VS Machine mission, someone had put Wave 666 on Decoy and it just bugged out the whole thing. There was a never-ending stream of Scouts, Soldiers and Demomen, with the occasional random Spy or Sniper. The round never actually ended, so I decided to practice my rocket launcher aim. After enough time, someone did a restart and we tried… [Continue Reading]

Battle of the Firespitters: Pyro vs Toa Vakama

Hello again. Are we all sitting comfortably? Good. You might want to stand up again, because your chair has just burst into flames. Along with the floor. Grab your computer and run, because two of the most hotheaded combatants in the universe are duelling just across the street. On one side is our masked, gloved and asbestos-clad Pyro. He/she is a very familiar being to us SPUFers. Specializing in ambush and close-range combat, the Pyro is a formidable beastie that skulks in the shadows. We don’t know very much about Pyro and probably never will. What we do know is… [Continue Reading]

Why Random Crits Are Good For You

I always raise an eyebrow when I see lengthy threads with detailed descriptions, where OP explains in great detail why random critical hits are unbalanced. So much wasted effort to explain something that is so obvious. Random crits are not balanced – they are designed to be so. They are not balanced, and it’s good. Why? Most of you who played, say, Mario Cart or even Call Of Duty already know the answer. Things like Blue Shell or the “Noob Tube” are there for purely social reasons – to keep players together, in a group. Time passes and players who… [Continue Reading]

Five weapons that synergize with Britney Spears songs

As a bilingual user of the amazing music program called Spotify, I like to listen to some Anglo/Franco tunes while I’m playing TF2. Quietly enough so I can still hear Spies uncloaking, of course. And with my impeccable musical taste, I get Britney Spears tracks coming up a lot. In case I completely scrambled your brains with that intro, let me get to my point. You know when you’re doing something intensive and a particular song gets stuck in your head? Then you do that same thing later and the same song goes through your mind? I call this musical… [Continue Reading]
