What’s the point of Quick Play?

What’s the point of Quick Play? It’s stupid. It’s ruined community servers, it’s strangled community content and it DOESN’T EVEN WORK CORRECTLY. It’s simply not worth using. And I’m going to give you a bunch more reasons why you shouldn’t bother touching Quickplay. use the Server Browser. It’s way better. Here’s why. VS 1. MoreĀ options. The Server Browser has way more options than Quickplay. Quickplay’s options are all hidden behind a little button, that you have to click. The Server Browser though displays all the settings that a server currently has: number of players, map, server tags (which tells you… [Continue Reading]

Character Annihilation – A Series of Stories and SPUFers

Feels like ages. It really does. Time flies when you’re having fun. Especially here at the Daily SPUF. But alas, I think it’s time for something different. We pride ourselves on writing a lot of articles, mostly about Team Fortress 2, occasionally about Left 4 Dead and other games. We never take the time though to sit back and talk about the people behind SPUF, without which the Daily SPUF would be nothing. Let’s be honest though, interviews are kinda lame when people don’t have much to say, and you could find out about fellow SPUFers by adding them as… [Continue Reading]

Character Annihilation 1 – Launched

Character Annihilation is a series of short stories based on the people of SPUF. Today’s story, the first in the series, is based on SleightSoda, resident Detonator jumper and an all round nice guy crazy enough to allow SPUFers to use his FastCo. server for events. The light flickered a couple of times, before finally deciding it wanted to illuminate the room. The sun shining brightly outside often feared to tread in this space. A typical garage, full of mostly forgotten things, best kept out of sight. What better place was there to hide such a treasure? Sleight slowly inched… [Continue Reading]

Why is this still a thing? – Mannpower

Hands up if you play Mannpower. Come on! Don’t be shy! Hm. Not a lot of you. But I’m sure if we check the server browser, we’ll fine loads of people playing Mannpower! Huh. Lots of people playing cp_orange, that’s a bit like Mannpower, what with its homing rockets and perma-crits, right? Um. No, apparently not. According to my server browser right now, there are only 10 not-empty Mannpower servers. Compared to the twenty five or so 2fort servers. Not looking good. The previous beta game modes, pl_cactuscanyon and rd_asteroid may have had similar numbers. But Asteroid genuinely brought something… [Continue Reading]

Syringes and Skeletons – Medic in Skyrim Part 1

So, I’m finally doing it. I’m playing through Skyrim as the Medic. Literally. Thanks to a bunch of mods that put a bunch of TF2 weapons into Skyrim, all held incredibly awkwardly, as well as an actually rather terrifying piece of armor that makes me look like various mercenaries, I can finally start a new game and not get bored. Of course, being the Medic, I’ve set up a few rules for myself: I have to wear my Medic armor for the entirety of the game. Because this armor doesn’t scale though (it’s basically iron armor for ever), I will… [Continue Reading]

One Night on Orange

It was around 7:30 P.M, Eastern Time. I was bored and in need of something to waste a perfectly good evening. That I immediately started TF2 should come as no surprise. That evening, I was in a feisty mood. Upon entering the title screen and selecting “servers”, I entered the “crits” parameter. I was promptly presented with several servers. After some deliberation, I selected cp_orange. Who doesn’t like oranges? ‘Twas my first time on an allcrits server, and it wasn’t pretty. Shortstop Scouts, Enforcer Spies, and Sniping Snipers were several of the more frustrating opponents. After stints as Spy, Scout,… [Continue Reading]

Of Ponies and Mercs: The Magical Mercenary

The Magical Mercenary. It seems a shame that I’m adopting this article after so damn long after the hat’s effectiveness has worn off, but it’s something worth discussing. Something different that doesn’t match with the game at all, while at the same time somehow fitting in no problem and being regarded as pointless for most of the year. But that’s what Full Moon restricted hats are for, right? The Magical Mercenary is clearly a parody of everyone’s favourite cartoon horse show. A pink pony hat. That’s paintable, so you can pretend to be the human mass murderer version of your… [Continue Reading]

On Tentacles and Lasers

I am shit at RTS MOBA games. There’s simply too much to learn. Too much effort for too little gain. That hasn’t stopped me attempting to play Dota 2 and dicking around in League of Legends though. Weirdly though, I understand a lot of the mechanics, but my dumb fingers can’t react in time. Hence I end up playing support. I’ve always been a supporting person. In League of Legends (or League of Leg-Ends, as it says on my desktop), there’s three types of support: Healing helping people like Sona, Tank-All-The-Damage-And-Start-Fights people like Leona and Initiate-With-Some-Sort-Of-Assistance people like Thresh and… [Continue Reading]

The Classic: Underpowered or Misunderstood?

Not too long ago an update hit, an update that some think of as the bane of TF2’s existence thanks to the addition of these then new taunts, mainly the conga, however there was a shining light to the update: we got 4 new weapons! That’s right, four whole new weapons, one being the Classic, which is suppose to be a homage to TFC’s Sniper Rifle. The Classic received a graphical update that’s very faithful to the original model, and honestly the gun looks amazing. Despite being ecstatic about this homage, I found myself a bit dumbfounded at the stats,… [Continue Reading]

On Snipers and Engineers

Name your three most hated classes in TF2. I wouldn’t be surprised if Engineer and Sniper were included in that list. People complain about both classes, one which seems lacking in a skill ceiling, the other having an infinite one, but perhaps Sniper and Engineer have more in common than we think? When you look at an Engineer, you see someone locking down an area with their sentry gun. Their sentry makes sure that you’re not getting past without some heavy hitters, preferably a Demoman, occasionally an Ubercharge. Everyone calls the Engineer stupid and skill-less, because the sentry does a… [Continue Reading]
