Good Riddance 2016

This year has been shit. Really, utterly shit. Last year, naive little me made a promise. Well, several. I would try and lose some weight, I would write 500 words a day and I would be more optimistic, wishing that 2016 would be a better year. As I write this post, one of my last 500 words before 2017, I will openly admit that I totally and utterly wrong. Both on a global level and on a personal level. Oh and I totally and utterly broke my promise of being more optimistic. I’m not going to go and list all… [Continue Reading]

A Tribute to Rattata, My Favorite Pokemon

I was in high school when Pokemania swept the country back in the 90s. I first learned about it when I was walking through my hometown’s shopping mall and Nintendo had a massive expo setup to promote the new movie Pokemon 2000: The Power of One. You got a free Pokemon card just for stopping by, and that was where I received my first Pokemon ever:   I fell into buying the playing cards and watching the TV show like every other kid, but I wasn’t allowed to play the games so it wasn’t until college that I finally got to play… [Continue Reading]

Woof

On Monday the 26th at about 10pm, Colin bashed on the patio door, whining and whimpering. He had been missing for ten days, was cold and scared and absolutely filthy. I was asleep at the time because I was ill and jumped out of my skin as the parents screamed with glee. After a warm bath (which he hated), a bowl of dog food and some running around all excitedly remembering who everyone was, Colin curled up into a ball and fell asleep. We’d been looking and calling for Colin for days. We went around the five nearby villages searching… [Continue Reading]

Soul Searching

Dark Souls was hailed as the return of the hard-as-nails, but rewarding single player experience. Harkening back to a time where games would be developed to be hard as hell as to pad out game time, due to storage space limitations. I remember the hype everyone got wrapped up in upon its release, the endless praise it received. I had also grown tired of the relentless, insistent, hand holding that had started smothering games. Power fantasies are great and all, but being a nigh-indestructible killing machine loses its edge pretty quickly. Occasionally, we like to have our teeth kicked in… [Continue Reading]

Overwatch’s Tracer is Gay

The latest Overwatch comic came out (meanwhile us in the TF2 fandom forgot that was even possible…) and it shows the heroes going home for Christmas to spend time with their loved ones or lack thereof. The main story involves Tracer trying to reach the shops in time to buy a present, and the rest of this article is going to assume you’ve gone and read the comic. While its not the only major reveal in Overwatch canon that came out with this comic, it’s the one that’s got all the gaming news sites talking about it. The forums are also ripe… [Continue Reading]

Malicious Multiplayer

Rainbow Six Siege is a game I picked up on the promise of tactical, slow-paced gameplay and then I sold it for lying. But I’ll save my quarrels with its gameplay for another time, because instead I wanted to focus on a few things that curse multiplayer titles in general, and Siege is the perfect scapegoat for demonstrating those points. So without further ado~ Player Visibility and Colour Simply put, a player should NEVER fade into the environment. They should pop against their background, but with more games leaning towards the duller, realistic washed out colour palettes, this becomes an… [Continue Reading]

The 25th, 2016

It’s that time of year again. A large number of people are hopefully stuffing their faces with food, or opening presents. There may be snow falling on the Daily SPUF, but across the planet, even in summer-time Australia, there’s people celebrating Christmas. Most people like Christmas, if only because it’s a day off work and you can eat whatever you want and no one will judge you. Plus, you get presents, unless you’re a freakish fool like me who doesn’t like receiving gifts. No, seriously, don’t. Christmas is also a time for charity. All over the place, selfless people are… [Continue Reading]

An Article a Day Keeps the Medic Away

Today is December 24th. Christmas Eve if you’re celebrating. The first day of Macromera if you’re a Rethavok. Either way, hopefully it’s a nice day. Things are cooking, people are excited, it’s all good. What better time than to reflect on, well, stuff. The Daily SPUF is now over three years old, having started way back in 2013, with a handful of articles written by a handful of SPUF denizens. Now, over 1200 articles later, we have come a long way since those humble beginnings. From Blog.Org to WordPress, from server to server, we’re still here. We’ve published an article… [Continue Reading]

Spy’s Alcove

Spy tutted as he flicked through Mannly Hats Quarterly. It was a Smissmas special edition issue, but it was the same old common nonsense. Ugly, crumpled top hats, ugly, stupid bandannas, ugly, horrific hats made out of scrap metal, ugly, pointless banana hats… Worse, half of this edition consisted of ugly Smissmas decorations. All tasteless and poor and pathetic. Throwing the magazine down, Spy decided to get himself a drink. He had half a bottle of fine red wine, stashed away in a hidden compartment of the chair he was sitting in. There were little hidden compartments everywhere, all containing… [Continue Reading]

Smissmas 2016 is here

Smissmas 2016 is here and its a tiny, weeny update! Seriously, very tiny. Like, it’s the sort of update you’d get in March 2013 to make everyone shut up for a bit until the big Summer update. Not even that, actually. Firstly, there’s the standard Festive Crate. It’s got a bunch of Smissmas items, 17 in total, that will look amazing in July. The special crates need a special key to open, available for the normal price in the Mann Co. Store. Nope, you just buy the crates from the store. No keys, no drops, nada. Opening the crate will… [Continue Reading]
