On Demoman in General

Some articles sit empty for months or even years, never getting finished. Most of my articles don’t, but this one about Demomen has been ignored. When I wrote the title, I’d played TF2 and played Demoman and my mind was full of thoughts that quickly vanished. Some of those thoughts later appeared as a rant about Demoknights but normal Demomen just sat here. So let’s talk about Demomen! Except… I don’t know what to say. But I do know what I used to say. Demoman was the power house of the game. As much as Medic, if not more than… [Continue Reading]

I JUST WANT TO PLAY MEDIC DAMMIT

You know what’s making me the most angry right now with TF2? I’ve been unable to play Medic for the longest of times. There’s actually several reasons why. It’s not just the normal stuff. By normal stuff, you all know what I mean. The horrible team compositions consisting of nothing with more than 150 health. If you are lucky, you might find a Pyro scattered in the ruins of your base on defence, but Pyro aren’t the best when it comes to decent pockets for Medics to heal. That’s not to say that Pyros and Scouts aren’t bad pockets. The… [Continue Reading]

The Pros and Cons of Class Limits

We’ve all seen it before, the four Snipers on a team of twelve, taking up a third of the team, all being useless. People, especially newbies, drift towards Sniper because he is just like the characters you see in other shooters. Cool, collected, headshooters with powerful rifles. It’s familiarity in a world where giant Russians shoot down gas-masked lunatics for killing their friendly German doctors. But anyone with TF2 experience knows how useless Snipers are the more of them you have. They see these stupid team compositions and scream things like “F2PERS MUST BE SEPARATED FROM PREMIUM PLAYERS!” and “WE… [Continue Reading]

The Great Pyro Rework by Someone Who Doesn’t Play Pyro

Yes, that title is stupid, yes, that is what I am about to do. I play Pyro a little, but I can’t say that I am a Pyro main. Then again, neither can the TF Team. But don’t worry, I’m not going to do anything dumb. Overall Changes Pyro’s base speed and health are fine. He’s supposed to be in the middle, and since every other >150hp class runs slower than 100% move speed, I don’t see why Pyro should get any more mobility, running-wise. The main changes here are to how his weaponry should work. Afterburn Pyro keeps his… [Continue Reading]

Why I Play Medic

With so many of the classes having such firepower and influence on the field, I can understand how Medic can be an easy class to ignore. But the beauty of the Medic is his ability through the wonders of medical science to unlock and maximise the potential of his patient, and by extension, his team. The first time I played Team Fortress 2, Medic was the first class I selected, being drawn to the weird and wonderful concept of being purely supportive to the team. A gun that was only capable of helping others both baffled and fascinated me. I’ve… [Continue Reading]

Day of the Demoman

Something strange has happened recently… I figured I’d talk to you lovely people about it. (That isn’t the strange bit, but hang in there!) I’ve always disliked most explosive damage weapons in games, especially in multiplayer. I find them wholly unsatisfying and irritating as they often are capable of the performance of weapons with much higher skill requirements without the need for the aforementioned skill. I like knowing I’ve earned a kill. Not just gotten one via a panic mash of button presses. Hence why when you get killed for the fifth time in a match by a Soldier shooting… [Continue Reading]

Somewhat basic heavy guide

We all know the general image of TF2’s heavy: He is fat, slow, easy to kill, requires no skill, loves his sandvich and above all, loves to say “pootis” while at the same time feeding the enemies you’re trying to kill. It’s no big suprise Heavy has this image because most people don’t know how to play him. But behold, for I am going to teach you the very basics of playing Heavy! And maybe one day, you will start loving that Russian guy, just as happened to me.   The skill in Heavy Before I say anything else, it… [Continue Reading]

I Hate Sniper

“Hang on there, Mr. Wolf!” You spurt, your glorious moustache twizzling in anticipation of a preconceived ramble “You said you LOVE the Sniper!” Thanks to your eagle-eyed vigilance, I can not deny this, however, our friend doesn’t have his downsides! You see, playing Sniper relies on more than simple aim and reflex. (Blasphemy! I know!) A Sniper should always have a heightened sense of situational awareness. Knowledge of the battlefield (sight lines, elevation) and the progression of said battle, where people are moving, and, more importantly, where they will be. Unfortunately, a certain Mr. Hale was unaware of these facts… [Continue Reading]

I Love Sniper

The challenge, the discipline, remaining calm enough to land that crucial shot when there’s an uncountable number of projectiles flying at you. Flickshots, quickscopes and, of course, headshots on airborne targets. Simply put, Sniper is a class only restricted by your own dedication and patience. It’s a nice change of pace from, quite frankly, the spammy nature of most TF2 classes. When you single-handedly drop a team, save the point or take out the enemy’s MVP and his pockets with efficient shooting, you know it was down to you, and you alone. Things don’t fall into place as Sniper. There’s… [Continue Reading]

Random Crit Balance

Random crits favor not just the people already doing well, but also certain classes, or more accurately, they don’t favor certain classes. It will never feel fair to drop a hype bar, banner, mmmph, heads, ubercharge, while moving a sentry, while being spychecked, or just die in general to a random crit in general, but some classes get more use out of random crits than others. Information on crits in this article come from the 2009 TF2 Blog Post on the same, and the TF2 Official Wiki entry on crits. Random crits scale from 2% to 12% as a function… [Continue Reading]
