Promoting TF2 with other Valve games

Heroes of the Storm is the Super Smash Bros for Blizzard’s franchises, as well as the company’s attempt to break into the lucrative MOBA market. And it’s not doing too well compared to its competition, which is sad since the genre was first born from Aeon of Strife, a StarCraft custom map, and it’s the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients that first popularized the genre. It’s just like how England invented football (it’s football, not soccer, come on America) and has only won once in the FIFA World Cup out of 20 games. So Blizzard decided to use their newest… [Continue Reading]

Wait, what, Team Fortress 2 turns 10 round about today?

You’re kidding me, right? Team Fortress 2, that silly war-themed hat simulator? That game with the goofy classes and even goofier weapons and cosmetics, is ten years old? Seriously? Well according to Team Fortress 2’s Steam Store page, yes, it is. October 10th, 2007. A whole decade ago. Bloody hell. That’s a pretty long time. Okay, it’s not really that long in the grand scheme of things. After all, I’m twenty five years old at the time of writing. The real TF2 Medic, if he were actually real, would probably be in his 80’s at least. Although the real Medic… [Continue Reading]

Tea Talk: Team Fortress 2 in general

Team Fortress 2 is ten years old. Most people would’ve known this. But I feel that this point bears repeating. To be very honest, it isn’t exactly that easy to tell sometimes, since the stylized art ages pretty OK. But because it’s ten years old, it has understandably lost some of its luster. Every time a new game comes out, it’ll chip away at least a sliver of TF2’s playerbase. The game is fighting a battle of attrition against the rest of the gaming industry for 10 years. Aside from that, as more and more new names enter the arena,… [Continue Reading]

Customizability: Article #1 – Team Fortress 2

When I play multiplayer FPSes, one thing that I really look out for is player customization, both in terms of cosmetics and playstyle. I have a feeling this is because TF2 is my first ever multiplayer game, and the first one I ever sank more than a hundred hours into. Between cosmetic and gameplay customization, the one that matters most is gameplay customization. I enjoy the greater amount of control the devs give for us to pick the playstyle we really like, by letting us design one that fits us. Hence, the ability to tailor a character’s kit to my… [Continue Reading]

Are you well, Team Fortress 2?

The time for a Team Fortress 2 summer update has been and gone. There was nothing. While the TF2 blog has been somewhat alive, with a post every few weeks (as opposed to the massive news droughts we’ve had in the past) there has been almost nothing in regards to updates. The Meet your Match update was the last big update we had, and that happened over a year ago, back in July 2016. It’s now September 2017 and since then all we have seen is the odd crate, a 2016 rehash of 2015’s Scream Fortress and a mediocre Smissmas… [Continue Reading]

Happy Jump Day!

For the last four years September 16th has been Jump Day, a somber holiday where the denizens of SPUF honor the 8-clip Sticky Jumper which was cruelly nerfed on September 16th, 2013. (Last year even reddit got involved!) We will never forget our fallen comrade. A weapon of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; it hath carried me through the sky a thousand times, and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is. A harmless weapon that once stood proudly among the few Demoman unlocks, a weapon that has seen its abilities gutted slowly but surely, a weapon whom Valve later updated… [Continue Reading]

Tea Talk: The TF2 Community and charity

I frequent Reddit a lot. More specifically, I frequent /r/tf2 a lot. It’s like a more civilized SCUD with more fun things happening. Recently though, there was a thread that caught my attention. A teacher was asking for help. He or she has a student that falls on the autism spectrum, and the teacher found out that he likes TF2. Recently, the student has been getting into trouble and getting frustrated. One of the reason is that the student was getting bored of the entertainment available. Thus, the teacher turned to the community and requested for TF2-related images. The only… [Continue Reading]

Twelve Against Twelve

There’s a trend in modern multiplayer first person shooters that disturbs me. No, it’s not the modern military shooter, that trend is already dying out. It’s not the rise of hero shooters either, since I do enjoy Paladins when I have enough to actually build a damn loadout. Overwatch I’m not too fussed about, but that’s partly because of the rather lackluster customization options available (I want my hats, dammit!). No, it’s an issue that I’ve been noticing for some time. Team sizes are shrinking. Overwatch, by default, is a 6v6 game. Paladins is a 5v5 game. Dirty Bomb has… [Continue Reading]

The Scotsman’s Skullcutter

I’m really not fussy when it comes to Demoman melee weapons. I don’t mean Demoknight melee weapons, because that I do care about. I used to be a fan of the Persian Persuader before it was murdered and a pretender put in his place. I then messed around with my HHHH for a bit. But truth be told, I like it better when things go ka-BOOM. So I only ever ran Demoknight when I ever touched Medieval Mode. In normal gameplay, I prefer to be chucking bombs from a comfortable distance. And don’t you dare suggest that I’m spamming explosives blindly,… [Continue Reading]

On Gold Weapons

Humans love to customize things. We want to leave our mark on the items that mean the most to us, and as a warrior culture we especially love to own weapons that have unique, stylized decals. In the programmed world of video games, where one need not worry about firearm maintenance or practicality, the sky is the limit for how many ways we can customize our guns. So why do so many developers immediately go for golden guns? When available (and they seem to be available in almost every game with weapon skins), a golden reskin will almost always have… [Continue Reading]
