Tiny Little Arena_Byre

Byre. It’s a little map. A forgotten map. A lonely map. An Arena map. It’s actually a map I had completely and utterly forgotten about for a loooooong time. Unfortunately for the people behind the Invasion update, the whole thing was forgotten about since it was released just before Halloween, had very little going for it and had most of its items left unadded. There was also controversy in various payments and stuff but that was sorted out apparently. But yes, for some insane reason, an Arena map was made and added to the game officially, in a time where… [Continue Reading]

Giving melees a league of their own

Many have their opinion when it comes to the worse weapon in the game. Some will argue Classic, others will argue Manmelter, and so on. While those are fairly bad, none of those come close to worst weapon of all-stock melee weapons. In a game where 5 out of 9 classes have a shotgun (and one has a Minigun), stock melee weapons can come across as bit redundant in close-range combat. This isn’t even mentioning how awful hit detection for melee weapons but if you’re interested in that this article pretty much covers that aspect. Although some will bring up… [Continue Reading]

So what happened to the other SPUF mercs?

It’s weird how we don’t actually have that many SPUFers named after their mains over in the TF2 forums. Unlike SCUD, you can’t change your name on SPUF at all, and using a bad name will just get you banned. Which begs the question, where are all these other SPUFers? For now, I won’t be including people like The Pyro! or The Heavy. who cheat the system by using punctuation. There’s a few of these, but they all have small post counts anyway. The sad news is that they’re not really anywhere. Every The ____ account apart from The Medic,… [Continue Reading]

An English Major’s Guide to Computer Care

Get a load of that amazing video. I just got off the phone with Steven Spielberg and have been informed my Oscar is in the mail. I really don’t have anyone to blame but myself for the state of my poor desktop, though. When the thunderstorm-induced powerout caused unknown damage to my video driver, my surge-protected power strip proved insufficient protection. But even in less hostile environments, my adventures turning my old Windows 7 laptop into a usable piece of hardware again have taught me a lot of things about how to care for your equipment from a position of relative ignorance… [Continue Reading]

Not so Rawr – Dragon: The Game Review

Hiya, Phovos here, and today, I have a word of warning for you all. The other day, I got a refund on a game. Actually, to be precise, I allowed a gift to be refunded by the person who bought the game for me. I’ve never felt the need to do that before, but I felt that poor SilverWolf had been ripped off of a good €17 worth of money. He could have bought Pohatu, Master of Stone, for that amount and both he and I would have had fun. The game in question was Dragon: The Game. With a… [Continue Reading]

MeeM’s Thoughts on Camaraderie

As seemingly the norm with the short articles I write, they start with an anecdote then use an example and close with a final thought. So, let’s not delay. The other night, I had a most wonderful hour and a half playing MvM with Medic and her friends. Although there were a few problems setting up, once we got everyone there the game started. Because it was Medic’s birthday we were doing medic only. Logically, we couldn’t do many hard waves like this so we started off by doing decoy. So, first round, six medics versus what 40 scouts(?). Pretty… [Continue Reading]

A Match-Made Future?

You’ll probably have noticed that, while the rest of the TF2 community is going mad for matchmaking, here at the Daily SPUF, we’ve been rather quiet about it. Really, we should have been all over competitive matchmaking like a rash, what with being a TF2 blog and all, but there’s reasons why we’ve not been that keen, the main reason being that not a whole lot is actually going on with the beta. Yes, I know, we’ve had patch notes every few days. Which is a good thing because some bugs are being fixed. But there’s no actual changes. The… [Continue Reading]

On Paarthurnax

Paarthurnax, for those who don’t know, is a very nice, grey, scarred dragon who sits at the Throat of the World in Skyrim. He’s crucial to the main story line, and sets you on the path to learn the shout Dragonrend, which was created by men and used to help defeat Alduin, the big bad guy, back in the dragon wars. And since Alduin has returned, it’s probably a good idea to have the Dragonborn be able to get the bastard to land on the ground so he can actually defeat him. This nice old dragon actually doesn’t seem to… [Continue Reading]

Decorating ourselves in other ways, a followup

Medic recently published an article discussing the myriad of ways Valve has allowed players to decorate themselves, and it got me thinking about a lot of the different points she brought up. It’s definitely true that Valve’s gotten more and more bold with every new cosmetic addition. We’ve come a long way since the simple character model toggles from Team Fortress Classic. But of course we can go further. As Medic mentioned, stickers are the most obvious cosmetic advancement we’re currently missing, since it’s mind-bogglingly easy to implement (just add it to the texture square the game is drawing the skin… [Continue Reading]
