Why I like Helltower

In the days leading toward the sixth annual Scream Fortress event, Valve have been kind enough to give us easy access to past events. Yesterday I played on Helltower with two decent teams and, for the first time, some idea of what I was actually doing. My team lost, but it was fun anyway. I’ve seen enough articles about Hightower already. Personally I think it’s a rather boring map, good for training in propelled jumps and sniping but little else. Snipers can be so annoying. But the Helltower version? Much more interesting! I know people are complaining that Scream Fortress… [Continue Reading]

Bumper Cars and You!

The new Halloween map has decidedly one of the funnest post-game grudge-matches ever. Learning from their mistakes with hell from last year, Valve has taken the concepts and turned them into two very fun mini-games and one which will probably get more fun once Valve finds a way to stop perpetual stalemates on the 9-Square grid. The Doomsday_event bumper cars are not exactly the most strategy-laden game modes TF2 has to offer but there are still some strategies quick-witted players can use to give themselves the edge. To wit: 1) Bind a key to suicide. The second you’re about to… [Continue Reading]

Scream Fortress 2014 coverage with Dekky!

It appears Merasmus is getting a little senile. Perhaps this is no surprise considering the millennia he’s spent upon this earth. His recent attempt at building a cursed carnival hit a stumbling block when he realized, much to his despair, he’d forgotten to place the carnival atop an ancient burial ground. For such is the way of the wicked wizard. But a plan was forged, and Merasmus invited a familiar group of mercenaries to help fulfill his plan. In theory one doesn’t require an ancient burial ground. A recent one will do nicely. In fact even the burial part is… [Continue Reading]

Scream Fortress 6 is here!

Yep, Scream Fortress is here! And it’s really bloody insane. There’s spells! And curses! And Carnival stuff! And BUMPER CARTS! Yeah, seriously. Alright, first things first, the basics. Merasmus forgot to build his evil carnival on top of an ancient burial ground and is now hiring you to do that for him. Said carnival is actually a variant of SD_Doomsday. You get the tickets (not the Australium) to the giant lift and then you get sent to a bumper carts minigame. That’s pretty much it. Actually, it’s not, but we’ve got a ton of articles coming up about all this!… [Continue Reading]

We all need to cheer the fuck up.

Right now, SPUF is just one giant cesspool of sadness, Sticky Launcher/Gunslinger complaints and general misery. Fun threads get drowned out by the shouting and the screaming and the crying and the whinging. Stupid posts rum rampant. Duplicates of the same threads with the same old crap in them run even more rampant. Close your eyes and randomly point at a thread on the main screen and chances are, assuming your finger landed on a thread and didn’t miss your monitor completely (or worse, you pointed too hard and broke your monitor) you’ll land on a complaint thread about something… [Continue Reading]

A Particularly Shield-Filled Story

When Helen’s voice rocked the spawn room, there were few happier than Tavish DeGroot. Between the white lines cast by his shutter shades, he saw his comrades, exhausted and begging for placement of a Dispenser. They were tiring of the battle for Badwater Basin. It had been a long, difficult day for the BLU team and much Jarate had been wasted. But there was a cart that needed pushing! So Tavish took up his trusty Frying Pan and affixed the Chargin’ Targe to his forearm. He re-positioned the Bounty Hat upon his crown and checked the pipe bombs tucked in… [Continue Reading]

There Once Was a Caber from Ullapool

Whose explosion was quite unbelievable With a loud angry bang It’d throw off Sniper’s aim By removing his head from his clavicles Now that Valve has, in their infinite wisdom, removed the ability of the stock bottle to shatter on a critical hit, the Ullapool Caber remains the only TF2 melee that is actually a bottomless supply of identical melee weapons as opposed to a unique item. It’s also a point of contention among the sub genre of TF2 players who enjoy going on SPUf and criticizing the game’s balance. For some reason they aren’t too hot on a melee weapon that deals… [Continue Reading]

I don’t actually like the Demoman.

The Demoman is by far the most dangerous class around. Unless you’re doing something really, really stupid, if you have a brain and basic game sense, you’ll do well. A bit like the Heavy. But unlike the Heavy, you’re not restricted to only using a minigun (because, no matter how much you try, Fat Scout is not an effective subclass) and you move at faster than a snail. If you know how to sticky jump, the world is your death-filled oyster. You basically rule. Alright, not exactly, in the pro scene, a Demoman needs protecting just like a Medic, but… [Continue Reading]

The Plight of These Pestilential Pumpkin Presents

Halloween is back! As Valve recently announced, all five of the previous Halloween events are playable! (I’m not sure why that’s news, they always make the old Halloweens playable, but it’s still appreciated.) However, as much as I want to get into the Halloween spirit, the one thought plaguing my mind is, “Are those darn presents going to screw me over again?” Most of the old Halloween maps come with presents that grant the player who picks it up some sort of event-restricted cosmetic reward. And that’s about all that’s remained consistent over the years, except for the number of… [Continue Reading]

What if Valve teamed up with Lego?

In AD 2010, the epic story-driven Lego theme known as Bionicle met its rushed end. Fans of Lego everywhere were devastated. Not only was the demise of Bionicle sudden, it also ended with the most disappointing wave of toys they’d produced. Those were some dark days. It was thought that Lego’s greatest project, which had lasted for ten glorious years, would be lost forever. Earlier this year, whispers began to surface, rumors of a return for the theme. Before the Lego Movie, Bionicle was as mainstream as Lego ever got. It maintained a huge fanbase even after it was cancelled.… [Continue Reading]
