The Sensible SPUFer

“Come on, Medic, it’ll be fun!” aabicus tried to convince the busy doctor. “Everyone’s going out trick or treating! Why won’t you?” Medic had been ignoring the gaggle of SPUFers behind him for about an hour now and they still hadn’t got the hint. He was still having flashbacks to last Halloween, when he let his brother borrow his lab coat and an old, broken medi-pack, and won a costume contest. Everyone called him a Ghostbuster. Meanwhile, no one had recognized Medic, wearing a grey suit and a paper mask, and he’d spent the evening protecting his sister from a… [Continue Reading]

Things that are Annoying to Play Against

Over in Warframe, I’ve recently begun to encounter Nullifiers. Nullifiers have the ability to create shield-like bubbles which prevent them being damaged from outside the bubble. These enemy units are typically a bit of a nuisance to deal with, because they protect other enemies inside their bubbles. On the plus side, these bubbles shrink and power down, and there’s a clear way of dealing with them – you need to get into the bubble and punch them in the face. It’s not the best, but Nullifiers make for a somewhat needed roadblock to stop you completely steamrolling everything. Back here… [Continue Reading]

Another look at Casual Matchmaking

Oh look! A Team Fortress 2 article! That’s a genuine surprise. Except it’s not, because Halloween is here, and Scream Fortress has always been my favourite event of the year. This year, not so much, but that’s really for another article. Yes, I wanted to have another look at Casual Matchmaking. What made me want to write this was the fact that I spent half an hour in one match, on Ghostfort (the Lakeside Event map). This map is incredibly long at the best of times, but casual matchmaking’s best of 3, combined with people being unfamiliar with the map,… [Continue Reading]

Thoughts on Scream Fortress VIII

This is going to be a short article. Why? Because Scream Fortress VIII (8 for those who can’t read Roman numerals) is short. There’s not a lot going on with it. It’s a continuation from last year. There is actually very little to talk about. Actually, to show just how little there is to talk about, the biggest criticism about Scream Fortress VIII so far has absolutely nothing to do with Scream Fortress, but with competitive matchmaking. Badlands and Granary were both removed from the competitive pool, and replaced with Turbine and Badwater, two maps that simply aren’t friendly with… [Continue Reading]

Scream Fortress VIII is here!

Yep, number 8. Scream Fortress fucking 8. It’s here. What’s in it? Maps, cosmetics, unusual effects, the usual stuff. All community stuff mostly. Also, Maple Ridge Event. I haven’t played that map since my 4v4 days. Holy fuck. Really, all this year is is an extension of the Merasmissions from last year. There’s new missions for the new maps, and a new key and crate, and cosmetics. I’ll be updating this a bit at a time. Anyway, I’m just posting the information here for here’s sake. I made a SPUF thread as well but you don’t care. Oddly, there’s no… [Continue Reading]

Why Resistances are Mostly Bad

Resistances and damage vulnerabilities are a thing in TF2. They’re scattered here and there as pros and cons to using weapons. They often appear as passive pros and cons, but some weapons throw on resistances or vulnerabilities whenever you switch weapon. Whatever Valve does with them, I don’t really like them. Actually, I hate resistances. First off though, damage vulnerabilities. Despite what you may think, vulnerabilities don’t really bother me. They’re easy for most players to understand, if you use, for example, the Candy Cane, you know that explosions are even more deadly than usual and you need to avoid… [Continue Reading]

Happy Late Birthday, Team Fortress!

I know I’m late with this, and Team Fortress’s birthday was the 24th of August, but Valve is late with everything so hopefully they forgive me. Anyway, let me get all the fireworks and confetti out of the way… Anyway, back to the actual event itself. Twenty years is a pretty damn long time. Older than my sister, in fact. Yes, Team Fortress is older than my little sister. That… is a worrying thought. It’s a very impressive thing though, that a class-based first person shooter series of games is still around. Despite the fact that the little, Short-Circuit-killable bouncing… [Continue Reading]

What’s so damn special about Overwatch’s matchmaking?

I see this all the time. “TF2’s matchmaking sucks! I’m going to play Overwatch because it has better matchmaking!” Anyone who says this isn’t thinking straight. There are legitimate reasons why you might want to play Overwatch, or even play it over Team Fortress 2, but if you’re going because TF2’s casual and competitive matchmaking sucks, then you’re not thinking things through. Here’s a conversation I had with my sister, who is an avid Overwatch fan. “I hate this map.” “Why?” “Too many choke points.” “Can’t you choose what map you want to play?” “Uh, no.” In Overwatch, you can’t… [Continue Reading]

A Random Thought on Lag

There are three things that drive the players of TF2 to near insanity and hopelessness. They are the butchered horse of weapons balance, the butchered and burned horse of random crits, and finally the unanimously accepted lag. Since everyone seems to have contributed something to the discussion of random crits and weapon balance it seems pointless to provide another rage consumed analysis of crits or another saddening analysis of weapon balance that shows (once again) that valve does not play their own game. Instead I will ramble on about another less common subject that only appears in discussions between performance… [Continue Reading]

Hats aren’t scary any more…

The other day, TMNWG mentioned an idea for an article, about how hats and strange weapons can intimidate people. Of course, a strange weapon like a Hale’s Own Sniper Rifle is pretty impressive and slightly intimidating if the person using it is genuinely skilled (rather than some idiot farming it in achievement_idle_noglass) but hats… I don’t know, I really don’t think they’re as intimidating as they should be. Hats used to be advertised as the be all and end all of TF2. You were a loser, poor and Irish, if you didn’t have something on your bonce. Hats have always… [Continue Reading]
