2 Kill 2 Mockingbirds

Harper Lee is publishing a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird! You know, that book you read in high school along with stuff from Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare and a bunch of other dead writers? The fact that the author is still alive is as much a surprise as the announcement that she’s publishing her second book ever. Go Set a Watchmen has something of a legacy to live up to, what with its prequel winning every literary prize known to mankind, and earning its author numerous honorary degrees, the National Medal of Arts and a Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to… [Continue Reading]

Dem Choppas

This article is a shoutout to my favorite TF2 Mod; dem choppas. Who wants a plinky submachinegun when they can have the most famous assault rifle in world history? There are all sorts of reasons to use dem choppas. Reason 1: They’re dem choppas. There’s no other real reason. I mean, they’re choppas. I’ve wanted to write an article about dem choppas for a while now but I couldn’t think of anything meaningful to say. But now, we’re like three days behind on articles and I need something to write for yesterday but I don’t want to publish a real… [Continue Reading]

My first time in a first person shooter…

I was never designed to be a gamer. I have the coordination skills of a donkey in ice skates, I over-think things and I jump at everything. Before I discovered PC Gaming, I used to play platformers and Worms Armageddon on the Play Station 2. First Person Shooters never really appealed to me, especially since it’s damn hard aiming with a console controller unless you have some sort of aim assist. Not that I ever really played one. Siphon Philter was probably the closest thing I played to a FPS and in that, I just set everyone on fire with… [Continue Reading]

Dearly Departed SPUFers

As I’m trapped on a 14-hour bus ride because I missed my 14-hour train ride and now have to grapple with the financial and physical discomfort this situation puts me in, I’ve been in something of a pensive mood. As my entertainment options have dwindled to draining the power on my no-internet laptop or observing the wonderfully repetitive West Virginian nature whizzing past the windshield, I thought I might take this opportunity to talk about some SPUFers who have disappeared as the years roll by. Obviously every forumite must disappear someday, I guess the most one can hope for is that they get to… [Continue Reading]

TF2 receives first new Normal Quality item since 2007

I can’t be the only one who thinks there’s something elegantly ground-breaking in that simple, simple change during today’s double-update. To quote directly from the update notes: “Made the Spellbook Magazine a base action slot item for players to equip and use when playing on a server that uses Halloween Spells” For gameplay, this means that if you join a server that has spells enabled (which can be any server thanks to a new cvar, but also plr_hightower_event by default) and your action slot is empty, it’s autofilled with this: A very minor change, at the moment almost inconsequential. Valve clearly… [Continue Reading]

On Stealth

Stealth and Shooters have always been strange bedfellows ever since they first met. On one hand the genres don’t appear to mesh well, what with your standard FPS starring a one-man army who plows through hundreds of mooks with an ever-increasing assortment of deadly weapons, and stealth involving slow, laborious sneaking past individual guards and relying on not making sound or setting off alarms. On the other hand, that’s exactly why stealth games have a dedicated niche fanbase, exactly because it goes against the conventions of the genre and uses the core elements of an FPS in a creative new… [Continue Reading]

What is your favorite thread in all of SPUF’s history?

Medic: See, that’s the thing, I have a crap memory and I can never remember the name of threads that I really enjoyed. The itsurblog threads have always vastly entertained me but quite often, I’ll only catch the tail end of fantastic threads. I suppose the Uprising thread in the Medic subforum has always amused me. It’s good to see a bunch of Medics all working together for a common cause rather than arguing over the Quick Fix. aabicus: Oh man, I’ve got some. Most of them are name-dropped in this thread or that one, but one that isn’t is… [Continue Reading]

What’s your most sentimental item?

When it comes to playing the hat game, I take no shame in admitting that I’ve done a lot with it during my time playing Team Fortress 2. My backpack has become a mess of weapons and cosmetic items to help emphasize my vanity. Despite being a hoarder, I can safely say that I wouldn’t be heartbroken to see most of my collection go… with a few choice exceptions. I speak, of course, about the items with sentimental value; market value is easily displaced by the items that have some sort of meaning to the individual, and that meaning can… [Continue Reading]

Itsurblog: Final Score

Itsurblog was a series of threads that ran from early 2013 to… well, I will explain that at the end. Itsurblog is without a doubt a milestone in SPUF history, where users got to know each other better, make friends and just generally have a nice chat. No topics were barred, so cosplay, soap, porn, maids, furries, bronies, fallout, and any and all combinations of these could all be spoken about at length, which of course they were because this is SPUF. In fact, the very blog you are reading was influenced by itsurblog, so there could be a place… [Continue Reading]

On Melee

First-person shooters have always loved the melee weapon, even as they render it essentially obsolete. No amount of situationality can prevent the visceral joy of beating something to death (especially something wielding real guns) with the bludgeoning instrument of the dev’s choice. Melee hasn’t changed very much since the early years of Doom and Wolfenstein. It often has the following upsides: · First or second weapon found in the game, if not just equipped from the beginning · no ammunition required to use · sometimes makes less noise than other weapons, or other unique combat advantages (usability underwater for example) · sometimes… [Continue Reading]
