The Amputator: Not Really for Amputating

I was looking over my favorite two loadouts in TF2 and realized I’d dedicated articles to every individual weapon except the Amputator. Well, that’s just weird, so let’s just fix that right now. The Amputator is not an unpopular weapon but it’s certainly not the average Medic’s first choice. I know of far more people who main the Ubersaw, and after that I’m pretty sure the Solemn Vow is second place. I totally get that; the Ubersaw’s reward for landing even a single melee hit is incalculable, and if you’re going to sacrifice that you might as well grab a… [Continue Reading]

Where is the TFC Medic?.. and other TFC Merc thoughts

The Team Fortress Classic mercenaries have long been thought dead, despite the fact that Team Fortress Classic itself is still playable (as is Fortress Forever, but that’s a whole separate thing!) and all that, with a tight knit community that will kick newbies’ asses from here to kingdom come. Point is, they’ve been alive the entire time despite looking like they came from the future. And the TF Comic series, which introduced us to more of the TFC mercs last time and proved that TFC Pyro was female, has been doing a fine job of getting them more time in… [Continue Reading]

Invasion left Medics behind

Wow, this year has been a bad year for Medics. Literally nothing special has happened to the class at all. It’s been nothing but bad news for everyone’s favourite healer, over a variety of updates, not just Invasion. But Invasion kinda just rubs it in even more. This time round though, Medic’s pain is kinda shared with my other main class, Soldier (since I haven’t gotten around to being able to call Demoman a main of mine yet), but honestly, Soldier’s always been lucky so this is an unusual change of pace. That’s not to say that the Invasion update… [Continue Reading]

Why smart Medics hate the Vita-Saw

Top Medics hate this weapon. This is the one item they DO NOT WANT you to use. Click here to find out more! You won’t regret your decision, which is saving the Ubers of hundreds of Medics as we speak! Do it! Click it! Go on! Yeah, that link doesn’t actually go anywhere, but the hatred is actually somewhat real. Alright, a true Medic main won’t murder you in your sleep if you abuse the Vita-Saw’s unnatural power… Maybe… So why do smart Medics hate this weapon? Normally, when a Medic dies, they lose all their Uber. That’s understandable, the… [Continue Reading]

Couldn’t care less…

I could not care less about weapon skins. No, really. I never bought into the Gun Mettle contract because I have shit luck and, even if I bought into it straight away, I would have only made a few Steam bucks rather than any actual real money. Pretty much everything because worthless within three or four weeks, unless you happened to get a decent strange or an unusual weapon, and even just strange ones are pretty damn uncommon. Yes, you can trade up your weapons, but the damage had already been done. What for though? Medic weapon skins are all… [Continue Reading]

Help me! The importance of knowing where everyone is…

Let’s face it, I am a spastic twat with all the coordination skills of a donkey wearing ice skates. I’m bad. And in organized play, this is multiplied tenfold in my awfulness. No seriously, poor old Jensen so rarely gets healed because I can’t damn find him. Okay, to seem less cruel to myself, Jensen is a good old Scout who never stands still, which makes even just locking onto him very tricky, but you get what I mean. Knowing where everyone is could be considered the second most important thing in the entire game, the most important thing being… [Continue Reading]

Confusing Comms: Health Callouts

An important part of competitive TF2 is communication. Being concise, clear and understandable are vital, especially as the environment you will be speaking in could have anywhere between 3-8 others all speaking at once while each listener is distracted by what is happening onscreen. It is no secret that the SPUF EU 6s and 4s team require improving with their co-op skills, so today I will talk about a simple aspect that is often overlooked: friendly health callouts. Enemy health callouts are well known, and the skills well practised. The term “lit” has entered even the vocabulary of non-competitive TF2… [Continue Reading]

The Cutting Room Floor

Not everything Valve playtested for TF2 made the cut. From the moment Brotherhood of Arms and then its replacement Invasion was completely excised, Valve showed themselves committed to the possibility of axing whatever needs to be axed in the name of quality. Through avenues such as item schemas and the TF2 Beta, us players have had the ability to witness a lot of these ideas get introduced and later bite the dust. Thing is, we don’t always get to hear the rationale behind why they didn’t make the cut. For every Repair Node and Facestab Knife that got a blog post… [Continue Reading]

TF Comics #5 is FINALLY here!

The fifth installment of the TF Comic series is finally here, after a stupidly long wait. Amazingly, it actually landed on the Monday deadline, disappointing those who hoped it’d miss the bi-yearly and yearly deadline. This comic is 79 pages of your normal Team Fortress comic-y action, featuring not one but two teams! And some other people. And crazy stuff. As always. So what are you waiting for, go read it! Meanwhile, I’ll just sit here, waiting for you to come back. Because I want to bulk this article out a little bit. I don’t like short articles really. *waits… [Continue Reading]

Medic goes to Comicon

And now for something completely different! Yesterday, I went to Cyprus Comic Con. Or CCC as it was called. I dressed up and everything! And because it’s somewhat gaming-related, I feel it’s worth talking about. Plus, I can’t let aabicus do all the real life articles! So yeah, Cyprus Comic Con 2015. This is the second proper one they’ve done. I heard about the 2014 Comic Con last year literally two days too late, and swore I’d go this year. And that’s what I did. The original plan was to go as a TF2 character. But that notion was quickly… [Continue Reading]
