Gunslingers vs. Highlanders: an analysis

There was recently something of an upset when the Highlander team swept the Gunslingers in the recent tournament, and it rightly seems to have attracted something of an interest in the SPUF community. (I notice there hasn’t been a single thread arguing the Gunslinger is OP since the event…) Since I’ve participated in two of these events, playing Medic for Season 2 (the first time the Gunslingers won) and the most recent Season 5, I’ve got a pretty good perspective from which to analyze the two teams. On a fundamental level, the first major reason that Highlanders performed so much better… [Continue Reading]

Are Three Weapon Slots Not Enough?

One thing that makes Engy and Spy unique are their PDAs (fourth and fifth slot tools). It gives them a unique role without pigeonholing their main weaponry. Imagine if Spy could only have a revolver, knife and cloak and Engy could only have Construction PDA, Shotgun and Wrench! It would severely limit their role and their combat effectiveness. I believe the same is true with the Heavy, the Pyro and possibly the Scout, the Sniper and the Medic. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they had an extra ‘PDA’ slot for an extra weapon or consumable? If you look at the… [Continue Reading]

Poker Night At Teufort

Poker Night at the Inventory was a great game, wasn’t it? Well, I liked it. I never got around to winning the achievement items, because I lose concentration on a game really quickly if it isn’t Garry’s Mod these days, but it was fun. The best bit was the dialogue. The conversation the other players, in this case Max, Strong Bad, Heavy and whatshisname all chatting away, talking about their day to day lives, sometimes throwing in the odd joke or random bit of nonsense as they go along. Lovely, right? Unfortunately, I never got around to getting the second… [Continue Reading]

Why Soldier is (Often) the Favorite and Most Balanced Class

Hello everyone! One of my favorite things about Team Fortress 2 is the idea of having 9 completely different classes work together and intertwine roles to complete objectives. Some classes like the scout are considered the pinnacle of skill to TF2 competitive players while the heavy and the engineer are fairly simple to newcomers to the FPS genre. The demoman is usually credited with having the greatest skill curve but the soldier is considered the ‘best’ and most ‘balanced’ class. Let me explain why many people share this common opinion. 1. Skill Curve The soldier is not the normal cookie cutter class of most FPSs… [Continue Reading]

A couple of reasons to play TF2 around about now

I know the feeling. You kinda want to maybe play Team Fortress 2 but you just can’t bring yourself to click on the play button. Or maybe you’ve just grown bored of the game. Or maybe you haven’t played in ages and are just looking for a reason to come back. Well, good news everyone! This article should help you find the strength to press play and start kicking (or healing) ass! Reason the First There’s tons of hats. Tons. Tons and tons and tons. The last two years alone have doubled the number of hats you can wear. And… [Continue Reading]

“Don’t forget to pick up the Equalizer, you’ll need that for later…”

“Hey, does anyone know how to get past the Octoheavy Boss on the Teufort level?” the 4-star SPUFer posts innocently on the forums. After a few minutes, people of various star rankings start shuffling in, typing away furiously (or not) at their keyboards, writing up their responses. “Oh yes, I really struggled on that boss!” a 3-star poster sighs. “I tried it so many times then just gave up and switched to my level 20 Soldier.” “What? THERE’S A SINGLE PLAYER MODE?” the newbie screams. “Piece of piss!” the well-known 5-star SPUFer gloats. “It’s so simple. You just do this… [Continue Reading]

Why Random Crits Are Good For You

I always raise an eyebrow when I see lengthy threads with detailed descriptions, where OP explains in great detail why random critical hits are unbalanced. So much wasted effort to explain something that is so obvious. Random crits are not balanced – they are designed to be so. They are not balanced, and it’s good. Why? Most of you who played, say, Mario Cart or even Call Of Duty already know the answer. Things like Blue Shell or the “Noob Tube” are there for purely social reasons – to keep players together, in a group. Time passes and players who… [Continue Reading]

A Silver Lining to the Stickybomb Launcher Nerf

As a fellow Team Fortress enthusiast, I’m sure I don’t need to remind you–the reader–about the controversial nerf to the Stickybomb Launcher from the recent Love & War update, nor the equally controversial reversion of said nerf. It became the subject of much debate and, unfortunately, heated and rather aggressive argument. Unless you had no opinion on the matter, this was a change that affected you. I’ll be frank with you: I didn’t support the nerf, and I was strongly in favor of the reversion. That’s not to say that I was adamantly against it; there were counterpoints from respected… [Continue Reading]

“OH GOD MY EYES!”

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away, a young Medic decided to look for a nice Team Fortress 2 wallpaper for her desktop. But unbeknownst to the little Medic, someone had turned off Safe Search on her search engine. As the scrolling continued, the nasty pictures started appearing. One by one, they corrupted the little Medic’s mind, before driving him completely insane. After much agonizing pain, the Medic screamed, smashed his laptop to bits and went outside for some fresh air. Alright, that was slightly over-dramatic, but things can happen when that safe search function is turned… [Continue Reading]

Theories on TF2’s Crazier bits

Respawn. That (and the fact that you can have up to 32 of the same merc on the field at once) is the major question that gets most debated by those nutters who care about canon and storyline and those sorts of ridiculous things. You know the type. They’re all over SPUF. “Why is the RED Scout talking about saving Smissmas in the new comic when it was BLU Scout who killed Nicholas Crowder in A Smissmas Tale?” they may ask. Or “Why does the Engineer Update state that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John ‘Tower of Hats’ Booth when the WAR!… [Continue Reading]
