Happy New Year! I hope…

Welp, it’s 2015 now. At least for Ol’Medic here writing this article. It won’t be 2015 for another 7 hours or so according to the blog’s internal clock, but that’s the sort of stuff that happens when we all live in different time zones. So yes, happy new year! I hope. Let’s take a few minutes of your precious time to see how 2014 went, at least for TF2. In the real world, it was turmoil as always, with chaos in the Middle East and on the borders of Russia and Ukraine, not to mention Ebola being a bastard and… [Continue Reading]

The Art of the Backcap

The backcap is an under-appreciated skill these days. It seems like nobody ever sends a brave lone gunman to scout ahead and take the next point milliseconds after you finish capping this one. And while this loss of a fundamental strategy is sad for the state of TF2’s metagame, it can be quite fun if you’re willing to be the team’s backcapper. Backcapping, as the name implies, involves racing ahead to the next control point once determining (or just hoping to God) that your team can take this one alone. The two most popular classes to backcap are scout and… [Continue Reading]

Fun things about the Grappling Hook

I’ll be frank, I don’t like Mann Power, because it utterly sucks if you’re not one of the 9 people with a power up. You just get your backside handed to you unless you’re clearly skilled enough to outplay them. But on the other hand, the Grappling Hook, the second stock all-class action item after the Spellbook Magazine, is tons of fun. Why? Because everyone can use it whenever they want, as long as the server allows it. And I, being the antisocial offline player that I am, decided to experiment round with it. First off, to enable the hook,… [Continue Reading]

Ways to Play Spy if You Suck at Spy

Isn’t spy awesome? I can’t help but give mad props to the character for what he willingly puts himself through in the line of duty. More than any class he relies on wits and positioning to outsmart the enemy, and all of his weapons put him dangerously close to an entire arsenal of retaliation the millisecond after he stabs, saps, or shoots. Boy, I wish I could do that. But I can’t. I really really can’t. No matter how much I try to play spy, whether I’ve equipped the most overpowered loadouts on the best spy maps against the worst… [Continue Reading]

The Tide Turner nerf is far too harsh.

Under the recent compound backlash that Valve went through after the End of the Line update, I honestly cannot blame them for hastily assembling anything that would resemble new content, regardless of a new mode, unfinished in beta, or even if that new grenade launcher’s model was sitting around in the workshop for at least a year. (Regardless of which, it is still a very pretty launcher.) Among the crowd pleasing game changes, there will be an inevitable trampling of a subset of players who are complained about. I represent the entirety of that subset. Or at least the people… [Continue Reading]

Spicing Up Medieval Mode

Who remembers Medieval Mode? It’s hard to forget it, what with its unique premise, acceptable breaks from its own premise and a game balance that I don’t think anyone truly understands. But I’ve been having trouble finding populated Medieval servers, and this saddens me because for what its got, I enjoy the balance between the classes. But I think there are definitely some things that could improve the game mode. At the core of things, it could really do with some more content. Right now it suffers from a limited version of Territorial Control-syndrome, where the mode concept is fine… [Continue Reading]

SPUF sings It’s Beginning to Look Alot Like Dustbowl

Download the song here. It had been a while since the last community project or contest, SPUF needed something to break up the usual chain of threads, and the holidays were coming up soon. So I thought, why not have SPUFers sing a well known TF2 version of a Christmas song together for fun? And thus, I created the thread for SPUF sings. It was something I’d brought up in an itsurblog thread or two prior, but I only just created it this last November. Of course, the idea wasn’t original at all, the concept was shamelessly ripped from a… [Continue Reading]

Demoman got nerfed, but FAIRLY this time! – Smissmas 2014

After EotL, there wasn’t much hope in the TF2 community. But Valve brought a small amount of hope back with the 2014 Smissmas update. And what did it contain? Those promised Demoman changes from the Love and War update! You all remember that, right? The changes that broke him and made Engineers run rampant that they thankfully reversed? This time round, Valve actually thought about it AND listened to the community! First off, here’s the patch notes. I warn you now, it’s a biggie! All Players who play TF2 during the event will receive a Gift: a Stuffed Stocking! Stockings… [Continue Reading]

Regenerating Health and not a Medic

I have a thing about regenerating health. I like it. If I’m falling back, I can heal some of that damage I just took before I am even close to a health kit. Regenerating health though is sparse, because it counters all forms of damage over time and generally punishes people for not finishing you off. It always used to be that Medics were the only people with regenerating health, but now we have two more sources of this small but appreciated ability. When it comes to regenerating health, it’s been a bumpy ride. The Blutsauger was the original weapon… [Continue Reading]
