Surviving Scream Fortress 2013 as a Demoman

Tired of dying to mini-sentries on Helltower? Tired of not getting an epic spell from the Witching Hour because you didn’t survive the run up the incredibly-lethal disappearing bridge? Tired of finding yourself with absolutely no options while pyros, skeletons, and monoculi bear down on you?

Well, too bad. It’s all gonna keep happening. But you can have it happen to you significantly less by switching to Demoman!

As a demoman, you excel at defeating enemies forced into narrow chokeholds. And there are a lot of doorways in Helltower...

Surviving Scream Fortress 2013 as a Soldier

Let's kick some magic booty!
Let’s kick some magic booty!

You’ve probably guessed by now what my second most played class is. Yes, it’s Soldier. And because of all the spam, not to mention the horrors I’ve seen lately as a Medic, I’ve had to switch to Soldier quite a lot. Actually, I’ve been pretty much forced to play Soldier because a team composed entirely of Scouts, Snipers, Spies, Engineers and a lone Pyro is NOT a good place for a Medic to be.

I could play Demoman, but I can’t aim. I could play Pyro, but there’s either one or billions of them. I could play Heavy, but, um… Let’s not go there. Instead, let’s have some fun and talk about tips for Halloween Soldiers…

Some things to do as a Ghost

One of the major downsides to real life is that once you die, there’s not much to do. Luckily TF2 doesn’t have this problem, at least if you’re playing Helltower and are currently in Hell. Here are three fun things to occupy the time while you wait for the next round to start.

1. Keep enemy snipers company

I couldn't get a good pic because this guy kept moving around for some reason. But I can assure you he shot nobody for the rest of the round.
I couldn’t get a good pic because he kept moving around for some reason. But I can assure you he shot nobody for the rest of the round.

The optimal strategy as a sniper in Hell is to stand at spawn and shoot people heading for Skull Island. It must get lonely, being so far away from the action, so go over and say hi! Make sure to get a good look at the barrel of his rifle, and keep looking. The sniper will show his thanks by demonstrating secret Australian square-dancing techniques, make sure to emulate them as well as you can. This is a friendship only made in Hell!

Introducing the SPUF Anthology Podcast!

Introducing...
Introducing…

Good day fellow SPUFers!
I’d like to introduce you all to a little project I’d like to start up. It’s a podcast, but not in the traditional sense.

Introducing: The SPUF Anthology Podcast.

Essentially, it is a collection of short segments submitted to us on various (hopefully) interesting topics distributed in a tri-weekly format. Designed in a way so that anyone who wants to participate has a shot- no livestreams to make, no Skype to mess with, and don’t even get me started on timezones… Segments can be created on their own time. For now we will be focusing mostly on TF2 related topics, but may expand into other games as well.

The Crusader’s Crossbow is now the least viable Medic primary

What Valve giveth, Valve can taketh away.
What Valve giveth, Valve can taketh away.

After a mere 48 hours of giving us the perfect Crusader’s Crossbow, Valve followed up by nerfing it’s damage by 33%. As someone who has spent hundreds of hours perfecting my skill with this weapon, and considers it my favorite weapon in TF2, let me say that the weapon is now useless.

Let me rehash the same reasons I enjoyed the previous crossbow and show how none of them apply any more.

Surviving Scream Fortress 2013 as a Medic

So many Pyros... And so many Pyro cosmetics!
So many Pyros… What can a Medic do?

“What? Surviving Scream Fortress? As a Medic? Surely that should be a piece of cake? It’s just like any other map!” You’re serious? It’s nothing like any other map. It’s an event based on one of the most deathmatch-y maps around, with more spam and confusion than you can shake a stick at. Throw in your normal Hightower threats like Mini-Sentries, and a whole new extra pit for Pyros, Scouts and explosive classes to launch you into, it’s nigh impossible to get around as a Medic.

Well, not impossible, but it’s far harder than most Halloween events. Today, we’ll be looking at a few tips you can use to last at least a bit longer out there…

The Great Heavy Skill Floor and The Not-So Great Heavy Skill Ceiling

At the risk of being hanged, shot, crit-stickied and more hilarious ways Team Fortress 2 players can hurt each other (Hey Valve, a noose/lasso weapon, make it happen!) I will admit that I am not really a fan of the Fat Scout mentality that seems to have been touted as “the only way to skill-index the Heavy”. It seems rather defeatist to me, like the Heavy needs a super shotgun primary to have some kind of validity in higher skill levels, which is really limiting and rather traitorous to the initial weapons and designs that Valve introduced in Team Fortress 2’s genesis.
It also, to me, is ineffective.
