If you could add a weapon of your own design into TF2, what would it be?

The Clear Shot Level 5 Grenade Launcher On hit: +20 health -25% clip size aabicus: As someone who loves the Grenade Launcher but wishes he had more survivability, this very simple setup (that should remind you of a current TF2 weapon) has been my favorite stat concept I’ve come up with. We’re going with Clear Shot for its name only because my suggestion was a little rude. In my opinion, it holds an attraction for all brands of Demoman. Sticky Launcher demos can use it to regain health if they get the opportunity, demoknights and Sticky Jumper demos have to… [Continue Reading]

The Non-Soldier Trolldier

Did you know that Demoman has a neat axe melee weapon?  No, not the Halloween one.  It’s great and all, but I’m talking about a different one.  You know, that one that’s under that pile of dust in the corner of your backpack, next to that Sun-on-a-Stick.  Yeah, the Scotsman’s Skullcutter, and I’m here to show you one of the best ways to actually use this weapon: pair it with the sticky jumper.

Some Weapons with Surprising Synergy

Ever since Valve released the Axtinguisher, weapon combos have become a huge part of Team Fortress 2. From the Sandman/Cleaver to the Jarate/Bushwacka, Valve has released a number of weapons obviously designed to go together, and for that reason they do so very well. But sometimes there are weapons whose synergies are not so obvious, who were clearly built for widely different roles, and yet somehow they can combine to create a lethal combo to the keen player who can see untapped potential. Here are a few I’ve discovered throughout the years. 1. Beggars Bazooka / Righteous Bison The Beggar’s… [Continue Reading]

Advanced Doomsday Strats (and some glitches)

Since my last article on sd_doomsday, I’ve played the map a lot more, and learned a lot more about how to maximize your presence and worth on the battlefield. I’ve also learned a couple of glitches with the map, and since I don’t have enough of either to justify its own article, today we’re killing two monkeys with one stone. Strat 1- Best rollout: This is, in my opinion, the most optimal way a single player can spend the opening minute of the round to help his team: sticky-jumping over to the enemy intel door and controlling it before they… [Continue Reading]

A Caber To The Past: Medieval Demo

SPUFblog really likes Medieval Mode. You have plenty of evidence. Even if the gamemode itself is not the most popular one, it is still enough popular that it gets played regularly, and you can pretty much always find a good server where to play (I unluckily can’t say the same for Arena…). And this means you pretty much always have a chance to play the subclass we’re talking about today: The Caberdemo! Or the Handgrenade demo. Caberknight? Democaber? It’s not played that often, and thus people usually just refer to it as “That Demo who is just trying to be annoying”. But the Caberdemo… [Continue Reading]

Why all Melee Unlocks should be Balanced like the Demoman’s

SPUF enjoys arguing about TF2’s balance. A lot. One of the most common issues to sprout up involves TF2 melee weapons. It’s no secret the vast majority of stock melees are underpowered, except those with utility like knife and wrench. If their only job is to deal damage, then they’re gonna suck because every class has a plethora of primary or secondary weapons that deal more damage at longer ranges more effectively. So when most competetive TF2 players agree that the bottle is the best Demoman melee weapon, this may seem unusual. How can it really be the best choice… [Continue Reading]

Surviving Scream Fortress 2013 as a Demoman

Tired of dying to mini-sentries on Helltower? Tired of not getting an epic spell from the Witching Hour because you didn’t survive the run up the incredibly-lethal disappearing bridge? Tired of finding yourself with absolutely no options while pyros, skeletons, and monoculi bear down on you? Well, too bad. It’s all gonna keep happening. But you can have it happen to you significantly less by switching to Demoman!

Some tips for playing Doomsday

If you haven’t guessed by now, I have something of a fondness for horrible unbalanced maps. With the right loadouts, you can become the undisputed king of these horrible spamfests, it just requires a significant amount of time playing them with an open mind, and always trying new things. For example, when I’m flying around this map with my Sticky Jumper, for once my trusty Locomotive Pain Train is no use considering there are no control points. So instead I bust out the Ullapool Caber for this first tip:

The Sticky Jumper has been nerfed

Valve had a small update on September 16th, where some unimportant stuff happened. When I first scrolled through the sparse update notes, seeing ‘bug fixes’ on item descriptions of cosmetic items, I was already thinking, whatever, it’s another one of those updates, nothing to see here. Then I read: “Updated The Sticky Jumper to only allow 2 active stickybombs at a time” Now, needless to say I’m not the only one saddened by this balance move. This innocuous training weapon has sent SPUF into a whirlwind of protest, defense, and general bewilderment. As one user put it, “Why is half… [Continue Reading]
