“Get Autobalanced,” ft. the Lonely Skybox

Lock eyes from across the room Down my Bonk! while the rockets boom Strafe your shots and hug your face So your own sentry kills you in my place Make my way through the enemy lines When a revved-up heavy I suddenly find Move in close, let the baseball fly My scattergun fires and the angels cry Leave your base go back to mine Intel papers fluttering behind The winning cap’s what I’ve got instore Gloat over chat that I want some more And I GET AUTOBALANCED I really don’t get how that pyro was there I passed four of… [Continue Reading]

A Complete Guide to Logging In and Submitting Articles

Note: This article is out of date. If you wish to contribute, please check out this page. Thank you! Hey all! In light of today’s contest, I thought it would be polite to write a succinct article explaining how to create an account on The Daily SPUF, start your first article, and submit it. So let’s begin! (I wrote this article from my Steam alt account in order to make sure I experience exactly what a new user experiences, nothing admin gets in the way:) The first screen you see upon visiting our fair site is this: To login/create an… [Continue Reading]

Dear VALVe: Please Don’t Add Low Gravity to Any Official Map

One of the most worrisome requests I’m seeing from numerous people is for Valve to add low gravity in some form to rd_asteroid. I understand that it would be thematically appropriate, but I’ve played on lowgrav servers and it screws with class balance in all the wrong ways. Before requesting lowgrav, I highly encourage you to go try out a lowgrav trade server just so you get a feel of what lowgrav does to a playstyle. Scout in particular becomes downright infuriating to play. His dodging/strafing ability becomes crippled when every time his feet leave the ground he blimps slowly… [Continue Reading]

Helvetica Standard or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Watch Moe Anime

SPUF’s resident maidsassin Corvette is throwing a huge 10000-post giveaway! Some amazing contributions have rolled through, as SPUFers prove just what they’re willing to do to get free stuff. Well, it turns out I’m willing to watch 3 episodes of Nichijou, which Wikipedia describes as a “Comedy Slice of Life Manga”, but my friends were quick to correct me that manga is the comics and anime is the show. The fact that I didn’t know that should be an indication as to just how green I am in this field. But that Genuine Pip-Boy might as well be a Klondike… [Continue Reading]

Four Things You Can’t Do With The Crusader’s Crossbow

The Crusader’s Crossbow is an extremely versatile weapon. It’s one of my favorite in the game because of the potential applications it introduces to the Medic playstyle. It’s also one of the most adjusted weapons in Team Fortress 2; its patch history is long and checkered with changes and alterations, for better or for worse. Under the guise of this confusing title, I thought we could go back into the history of this weapon and look at some things it has lost over the years. 1. You can’t shoot arrows with it. When first added to the game, the Crusader’s… [Continue Reading]

Some Under-loved Weapons Which Shine on rd_asteroid

When I first played rd_asteroid, my eventual thoughts were…meh. It’s decent, but before I really understood the map and the game mode it was confusing to the point of frustration. And once I’d played it long enough that it was no longer confusing, its many flaws just seemed to hamper my ability to enjoy myself. A whole lot of classes seem underpowered on this map and several design choices (especially the plethora of overly-good sentry spots) only make it worse. But the more I played, the more I slowly realized that a number of my problems were due to my… [Continue Reading]

What Use Are Friendly Disguises?

That above question has bugged me for years. Why would you disguise as something that does nothing but inspire the enemy to shoot you? I knew there must be a reason to it, else Valve wouldn’t have added it, but serious thought only produced “trigger Dead Ringer while looking like something else, so they don’t keep spychecking after that.” Which is a decent use (and clearly intended by Valve, as the fallen corpse will remain that of a non-spy enemy) but were there any more? Turns out that, after speaking to some spy friends of mine, the answer is yes.… [Continue Reading]

TF2 Mods: The Next Generation

InstantMuffin recently made a buzz over on SPUF by finding evidence that an upcoming TF2 game mode may be called “Robot Destruction”. He’s also a prolific modder whose most recent claim to fame is Prop Hunt: The Next Generation, a remake of one of the most popular TF2 mods out there. Today, he took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about his past work, his current happenings, and what the future may bring. 1. How did you first get into modding? I basically started writing SourceMod plugins around 2010. I usually develop desktop applications. I… [Continue Reading]

Life is Rough When You Lose Your Stuff

I’ve gotten some pretty funny comments about my Loadout cosmetics (or lack thereof) since my Loadout article went live. Some were wondering how I could justify spending $55 on in-game cosmetics, since unlike in TF2 I couldn’t possibly have prior backpack wealth to rely on. Am I one of those rich senator’s sons who can frivolously drop wads of cash like spy does in his newest taunt? Well, actually I sold almost my entire TF2 backpack to afford that birthday suit inĀ Loadout, and I’m still selling most of what remains. So now I get to be nude in two different… [Continue Reading]

Loadout Uncovered

Sometimes I get annoyed at how nobody in TF2 is a blanket generalist who has something to do in any situation. Sometimes I don’t want to rely on my teammates for crap, I just want to go be a versatile tanky health-regenerating speedster who laughs at the term “competitive weakness”. Once upon a time, I would then go play Team Fortress Classic and their combat Medic. Nowadays, I’m finding that Loadout has been scratching that itch for me instead. Loadout has done a great job of carving its own little niche out of the cartoony multiplayer FPS genre. (That really… [Continue Reading]
